My first (and so far only) DSLR is a Nikon D3100; I bought it four or five years ago and I'm still learning with it. One thing that really helped me was the book "Nikon D3100 for Dummies." It may not be the most comprehensive manual around but it is well organized and easy to understand. I'm sure there is a "For Dummies " book on the D3500 as well. Enjoy your new camera and please be sure to share your efforts here on the hog.
