I have a nice Nikon D7100 camera and I like it but was thinking of updating it. I was still going to keep it as a backup. The two I’m looking at is the D7500 or the D500. I’m leaning towards the D500. The reason for that is the tilt screen and backlit buttons. It also supports a higher speed sd card. The negative it has no flash built-in. The main things I like taking photos are people, waterfalls, landscapes and was going to try night sky photography. I would like to hear from someone has has these camera and can tell me how they perform with long exposure of waterfalls and fast shutter speed for action shots.

I have (and use) both the D7100 and the D500 (as well as the D810 full frame). For landscapes and other subjects better done with full frame I use the D810 but my backup for that is the D7100 because I don't need the speed of the D500. I use the D500 for birds/wildlife where speed and sometimes (esp. BIFs) the high shutter rate is a great advantage. If money is an object I'd just stick with the D7100.

I have a D500 and D750. The D500 has Nikon's best autofocus system. The D5, D500, and D850 are the first Nikons to have a processor dedicated to solely the autofocus. All of my lenses seem to focus a little faster on the D500. It would be the best camera for your action shots. This is one serious camera and gets the job done.

It uses an XQD memory card and it can use the UHS-II speed SD cards.

The joystick on the back is great. When I use it on model photo shoots, I can move the focus point around quickly.

If you get one, look into getting the Nikon DK-19 eyecup. I have one on mine. The standard eyepiece is flush with the LCD screen and my face was always against the screen. The DK-19 provides more room and it eliminates glare on the eyepiece glass.

They eliminated a built-in flash to make it more rain resistant and to make the body a little stronger.

Get the Nikon BS-3 hot shoe cover. It's a two piece cover. The upper portion is rubber and completely covers the hot shoe. It will prevent any rain from getting into the hot shoe area.

I thought that eye piece comes with the camera. Or that’s what it looks like in the picture of the camera.

I've owned the D90, D7100 and still have my D7200 and most recently bought a D500. Despite having no inbuilt flash (a bit of a downer) I love the camera and it's a step above any of the others I've owned.
And despite being a crop sensor camera, I can take landscapes...

The DK-17 comes with the camera. I had the DK-17M. It provided more room in front of the LCD screen but its magnification (1.2x) was too much. With that much magnification, part of the display in the viewfinder was cut off. The corners were cut off also. I ended up returning it. I then got the DK-19. That one is working out great. There's more room in front of the LCD screen now and it blocks stray light from entering from the sides. If you get one, be sure to close the eyepiece shutter before you remove the existing eyepiece. That will prevent dust from entering the pentaprism area. It says all of that in the instructions that come with it.

The D7500 is not an upgrade. It only has ONE card slot.

I moved from the D7100 to the D500 2 years ago and not once did I wish I had the pop up flash. The D500 is a great camera, go for it!!

The D7500 does have a tilt screen as well as the built-in flash. It doesn't need 2 cards as you can just have it shoot jpeg + RAW. My friend has the D7500 and loves it. For your interests, probably the the D7500 would be just fine.

I upgraded accidentally when my D7500 hit a concrete floor and needed to be replaced (too expensive to repair). Since birds are a primary interest, i went with the D500 for the faster FPS. For more casual use, I use a D3400 for the smaller/lighter body. However, the D7500 is a fine camera with most of the same attributes of the D500, and a little bit smaller and lighter.

going from D7100 to D500 is a good move in my opinion.

I have the D500 and once used my D7200 as backup (which I still miss). The D500 performed pretty well shooting astrophotography. I later sold the D7200 for my current D750. What an adjustment to heavier lenses. Now I find I use the D750 for landscape, portraits, night skies, anything on tripod. and the D500 has gravitated to pretty much sports and critters and anything with a long reach. I can still use it effectively for landscapes and low light if I wish. I may upgrade D750 to a D850 or a Z7, just because of the similar controls on D850 to D500. Maybe Z7 for weight because mirrorless seems to be the future of new lens tech.

I use the D500 for long exposures up to 2 minutes and also photograph birds in flight. The camera handles both nicely. The D500, D5, and D850 share the same focusing system. Nikon now on these camera's has a separate focusing system just for focus, something Canon has had for years but now Nikon has it. And yes, this new focusing system is the real deal. This focusing system is not available on the D7500.
I use the rear touch screen all the time, really makes editing easier.
Hope this helps.

I believe the D7600 will be introduced this year, you may want to wait.

I had a Nikon D3 and traded it in for a D810 because I thought I may want to record video...which I did one time (I wish that I had my D3 back).

The D500 is an excellent pro-grade camera and I have my eye on one too. A friend was kind enough to let me take it on a trip and I found its performance to be stellar in everyway that I used it. The autofocus speed is a beast for target acquisition. I believe the D500 to be among the best DSLR APS-C sensor camera presently on the market.

The fact that it doesn't have a pop-up flash is no disadvantage to me and it makes sense that it doesn't the same way and reason that the D3 through D5 did not and that is moisture resistance for the pop-up is a weak link in the camera's safeguard from moisture.
