Some thoughts on "moments"

I like to capture "moments" and if you can get "moments" in great light it is even better, however that is rare, at least for me.

Being very familiar with your camera will help a lot. So that means if you have different systems you may have problems. Keep in mind that if you are not looking through the viewfinder you may miss those moments. In other words playng around with menues and twidling knobs doesn't help.
For capturing some moments a fast and accurate camera is a necessity, especially for subjects like birds in flight and some sports.
Knowing your subject helps a lot as does always having a camera with you.

Where and when do "moments" hapen?
With family - example #1 (shot whilst we were having coffee).
Sport - lots of oprtunities. Example #2
Nature, especially animals and birds. Example #3.
Theatre - more to come on this.

Feel free to contribute, and ask questions.
More to come and thanks for looking.

Perhaps this will help everyone to understand this 'thing' called The Decisive Moment. The idea is a concept put forward by the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Google The Decisive Moment and you will discover many references to this long established idea as a way of approaching the use of the camera.

I feel the same way Richard, about always having a camera with you. I keep one in the living room to catch any moment and did so with my children when they were tiny. I remember one Easter the kids were coloring eggs and showing off their work when my daughter got my son laughing. It carried over to more laughing to hysterical laughing. Got it all and it was great fun for all. I'll try and find them to pm them to you.

Richard, I agree with you as making memories or moments with our, for me, hobby. Your examples are fantastic.

Patience
Sometimes to capture moments you may have to be very patient, especialy with subjects you cannot control.

Shooting alone, or with like minded people helps a lot as non photographers may appreciate the time you spend on photography. This is from persoanl experience.
Here are some examples all shot with a long lens.

#4 Lying flat on the ground, and spent a fair amount of time tracking this wild bird. Location was a suburban village green sportsfield.

#5 At a motor race meeting. When shooting motor sport and there is a group of vehicles around, your track them. If there is only one vehicle around you track it. This is a single vehicle incident. The late afternoon light also helps with this one.

#6 At a suburban wetland. Spent a fair bit of time tracking this guy (I was shooting alone) before getting this. The lizaerd was gone in a flash.
