Right out of my wifes phone

My wife ribs me about why I still carry my DSLR, lenses and tripod when we are out exploring near our home here in the Eastern Sierra in Nevada. I tell her that my gear is much more sophisticated than a phone, and gives me much more control. On our last excursion the wild flowers were something to behold. So she whips out her phone and takes this picture with her five year old phone. No processing either.

Many phones do nicely.

(Mine is seven years old and 8Mp. It does well, especially taking panos.)

Yep, same with me. However, if I want the photo to be a wall-hanger or high quality for exhibition, I have to take the phone photo into Photoshop and up the quality.

The cameras in the phones are optimized for good conditions and produce a fixed, very good result.
For many people they are all they want and can use.
Cameras can be both more versatile or more specialized depending on the body, lens, accessories used etc.

Nothing says you can't use both.

In the days before digital many studio and other pros used Polaroid to check lighting etc before doing the "money shot" with a medium format or sheet film camera.

Getting any decent picture is better than thinking "If I only had a camera!"

Very nice shot with good composition but IQ on a cell phone is sorely lacking, IMO. Still acceptable in general.

Just explain to her how much better the photo could be with a real camera.

...I sometimes like to believe it’s the equipment too...and then...BAM...!someone comes around and proves me wrong again...but then I think imagine if she had a real camera and the illusion continues...!

Cell phones are progressing by leaps and bounds. I recently upgraded my 6 year old iPhone to an Xr, and am amazed at the image quality.

It is a real camera. Quality prints up to 16x24 are common with good technique. You just have to know the limits like any other piece of gear. Check out Emil Pakarklis on YouTube to see what they can do.

Your wife did a fine job with her phone but I can well imagine the image you got with your equipment outshines hers. Would like to see your shot taken at the same place. I do think hers deserves

Sure it is. So are pin-hole cameras.

You must be a skeptic. Quality prints are a good measure of a camera's capabilities. A few of the pros here on the Forum report decent prints so I’ll go with their experience. To each his own.

Yep, I'm a skeptic...of all things. I need proof. I can't imagine any scenario, where a phone could take a better photo than a good DSLR in competent hands. Well, there's one. When the phone's in your pocket and you didn't bring a real camera. But that's not high praise for a phone "camera"

16x24 prints made by a pro are pretty good proof, even if the photo was just a snapshot. BurkePhoto, a pro on this forum, has done that. A quality phone camera in competent hands takes quality photos.
