Darn good thing we had a tailhook on Bloodhound 91 !!
That was our Marine F4 we used as a GPS testbed to validate ordinance release software in the late 70's. On one of our missions, we lost the hydraulic pump - so had to deploy the RAT (Ram Air Turbine). Made it back to El Centro without any more hitches - but Pilot wasn't taking any chances - so he called for an arrested landing (Yeah - the El Centro runway had cables !!). THAT was ONE QUICK STOP !!
OBTW - - check out the landing gear on a Marine F4 !!
It's about 2 - 3 x as sturdy as those bought by the USAF. Something about carrier landings really being controlled crashes !
