Thanks Raider and Richard,

I wasn't really sure if the concept would work. The head moving backward at the right speed seemed to do the trick in leaving the trail. About 30 shots and a not to happy model working free of charge to get it right. We have since made up.

I was trying to figure out a name for this shot and found it difficult to come up with one. The shot was taken looking over the Gulf of Mexico at night.

Any suggestions on a name? Water prayer?
The photograph was purposely composed unbalanced. I wanted entry of water in left third, water going out of frame and then reentering frame. Stars are droplets of water.

I haven't had a problem freezing small water... Big water was much more challenging.

Comments (A name?) welcome.

I knew that....musta been my subconscious trying to bring it forth....

Will you tell me how you caught these water drops...settings and such?? I was trying to catch drops today and didn't have much success. They weren't as distinct as your drops but I'll have a chance to try again.....help me do better???

Sure, I used two einstein monolight studio strobes in Action Mode. At its lowest power it has a flash duration of 1/13000 of a second. The power setting had to be low 1/16 power to get the short flash duration such that no blur occurs. To keep my ISO down I shot with two strobes at 1/16 power giving me effectively 1/8th power. I suppose you could stop this much water with a small flash but your ISO would have to be higher and you would have to still use multiple flashes. Flash duration of small flash is not as fast as the Einsteins. Flash duration is a common mistake people do not consider when buying flash heads. Example is the D1 Air. Cost is $1500 for one of those strobes with its shortest flash duration around 1/2000 or so(Don't quote me on that number). I can buy three Einsteins for what 1 Profoto D1 air cost(The Profoto still would not stop moving water). Secondly, I have six battery packs. I can shoot hundreds of shots with one Paul C. Buff battery pack. I think the packs go for a couple hundred a piece. Spare batteries are $89.

IF water is not dropping that far it's easier to shoot the drop non blurred. Remember physics. Shoot closer to the source of the drop and gravity doesn't have as much time to work. aka Velocity of drop is slower.

Be sure and use flash to stop the water. The shutter alone just won't cut it. it would have to be very bright with a very large aperture(small number) to get the 1/8000 shutter speed needed. I don't think it can be done... But I've been wrong more than once.

The shot rendered out a lot better on my website. You can see the full size shot there. Be sure and enlarge your browser window before you click on the picture if you decide to look.
Let me know if my website shot looks better?

Good luck!

I hope this helps be sure and post the shot after you get it working.

One other note. The stars are actually water droplets flying through the air. I evened them out a bit in Post and clustered some at the very top of the screen added a blue tint. It was supposed to be the start of a galaxy. Aside from these edits and a slight desaturation(not the water) the photo is as shot. My website should also show this much clearer than the small picture here.

Very creative. When I look at it, I see a woman, prehaps Gaia, better know as Mother Earth, painting the heavens with droplets of water that turn into star's. You might try something like "Gaia's creation" or maybe "Nepturn's daughter".
I like, it's outside the box.
