A Most Beautiful Church

Traveling in Germany 10 years ago, I visited one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. It is located in the open rolling hills of Bavaria, miles from any sizable city. It is Wieskirche, just down the road from the village of Wies (pop. 657) in southern Germany near the Alps and the border with Austria. The story goes that in 1738 tears were observed on a wooden statue of Jesus known as the "Scourged Savior." This "miracle" resulted in a pilgrimage to see the statue. In 1740, a small chapel was built to house the statue, but soon became too small to handle the pilgrimage. So, Wieskirche was built from 1745 to 1754 in a grand Bavarian rococo style by two Zimmerman brothers who were local architects and artists whose works in this period can be found all over Europe. The brothers did most of the art work and ceiling frescos
in Wieskirche and brought in other famous artists to do the altarpiece and a few of the statues in the church. I have borrowed the second and third photos from other sources; the remaining photos are mine. Enjoy the photos and visit Wieskirche if you are ever in southern Germany.
