Agreed. It's designed to give you uniform flat lighting.

It really depends on how you use it. You can look at his YouTube videos or even MagMod Videos to see how to use these different Speedlite modifiers...

When I used a lightsphere once, I got much better results blocking most of the light from the FRONT - leaving just a tiny opening to allow a tiny amount of direct light to provide a nice catchlight in the eyes. However, the serious loss of light using that thing, and the lack of directionality was enough to use it only that one time.
