This is not the usual post about finding missing files, etc. I know that all editing, deleting, etc has to be done inside PSE or files will turn up missing. Question is .....if there are several copies of photo in File Explorer, can all be deleted except one and not cause a problem?
Thanks, Don
Not necessarily. You can have the same filename in different directories and be different files. For instance, one image file may be the original and in another directory have an edited version. If the filename, filesize and the modify date/time are the same then you're very likely to have a duplicate. Then one image can be deleted. Just make sure that your image manager (PSE or Lightroom) isn't pointing to the file you intend to delete.

Change the name of one of the files and see if it goes missing in LR. If not, you can delete it. If it does, just change the name back.

Have you tried Find > By Visual Searches > Duplicate Photos from the Menu bar in the Organizer?
Just don’t delete the file that PSE has in its Organizer data base. Be sure you know what the File Explorer directory path is to that file. File Explorer can be used to delete all other files with the same name because they are in different directories than the one recorded by PSE.
