No. I don't recognize it either. We've had tons of Painted Lady Butterflies and a good Number of Monarch Butterflies this Spring. I've lived in So. Cal. all my life (yob 1954) and I don't recall that one.

Where precisely did you find it? Is that a Salvia apiana it is on in the top picture? Notice the square stems!

They look like tropical butterflies that are featured in a captive butterfly exhibit.

I think it might be
Banded Orange | Dryadula phaetusa | Family: Nymphalidae | Subfamily: Heliconiinae | Tribe: Heliconiini | Wingspan: 2.7 to 3.2 in

I found the info here. https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/exhibits/butterfly-rainforest/id-guide/orange/

PLEASE explain where the butterfly was at when the photo was taken. There are tens of thousands of butterfly species in the world - and they don't all exist in the same places!

Thank you for your responses. You are correct hat it was captive so it makes it more difficult to identify.

I have never seen one like it. It sure is pretty, and you got some beautiful shots of it, jeff.
