No. I don't recognize it either. We've had tons of Painted Lady Butterflies and a good Number of Monarch Butterflies this Spring. I've lived in So. Cal. all my life (yob 1954) and I don't recall that one.
Where precisely did you find it? Is that a
Salvia apiana it is on in the top picture? Notice the square stems!
Whatever it is, you did a very nice job capturing it.

They look like tropical butterflies that are featured in a captive butterfly exhibit.

PLEASE explain where the butterfly was at when the photo was taken. There are tens of thousands of butterfly species in the world - and they don't all exist in the same places!
