I need to replace or add to my HP 8610 a good colour printer. Which is best for photo’s long term?l Laser or ink jet and which is best. My HP still works for B&W documents but not good photography. I am open to free standing or a good ALL IN ONE again. BUT not the size of a VW Bug.

Ink Jets are archival, not lasers.

I've been using an Epson "WorkForce 7110" for several years - far superior to the HPs I previously used. It has two drawers - one for standard printer paper and the other for high quality, color printing. There is a separate black ink cartridge for B&W printing so as not to deplete black ink from photo-printing needs. Finally, I've had no problems with ink nozzles clogging, like I did with HPs.

Color laser printers do a lousy job with photos. look for an inkjet made for photo printing. It should have 7 or 8 colors of ink, and more than one black or gray ink if you want good B&W printing.

Thank you, I will look into that on Wednesday or Thursday.

Any suggestions as to which ink jet. I have noticed that some jets have a icon for “photo” and some not and will check that out. I realise that the ink is the driving force behind the printers.

Thanks,

As I mentioned earlier, I've been very happy with my Epson for photo printing. The WF-7110 (several years old) has only three color inks (plus black). But, newer, more expensive models have more.

Epson over HP; but I've never used Canon printers, which have a very good reputation, also.

Thanks for the additional information. Now days it is getting harder to decided on items with all the access we have. Back in 1902, you just went to the store, picked up what they had and that was it.

By the way, Rich in Seattle, it is nice and sunny down here. I have a friend that just got orders to that part of the country who is from Panama City, FL. Think it will be a shock for him?

It depends on what the max size you intend to print is. Regardless of which manufacturers ink jet printer you get, they pretty much all use a print engine made by Canon so, if you're not printing larger than 8.5 X 11, the Canon TS 9000 series printers do an excellent job at color and an exceptionally excellent job at black and white. The Canon Pro 100 is inexpensive, uses 8 color cartridges and prints a max size of 13 X 19.

He'll absolutely love it if he gets here during the summer, especially if he's into sailing. But, at some point in late October he'll start to miss FL big time.

I have an EPSON ET-7700, which uses refillable ink tanks (from an bottle). Very economical.
A3 version also available.

Canon is the only way forward for being serious, and for long term.

On another day, I'll gladly share with you all what I learned about HP...from an HP supervisor.

I agree to get something like the Canon Pro 100 for photos. Buy a color or B&W laser for other tasks. The laser is more reliable and less expensive on ink. If you need color for non photographic works like graph and charts then get a color laser if not a B&W laser is cheap and print black text better than the inkjet.
