Phones vs cameras

Phone's may replace the basic "point and shoot" camera but don't see them replacing high end cameras in the near future. Then again, I owned a photo lab and said I didn't think digital cameras would ever compete with film cameras.

Having said that, I don't see my iPhoneX or any future phone replacing my D850's and arsenal of lenses ranging from 14mm to 500mm. I shoot to make money with my images by enlarging them and printing them on metal, sizes up to 40x60.

Yes, they will get better but keep in mind the function of the device is to be a phone and a convenience for communicating. The camera portion is more-or-less an after thought so don't see that much money being put into it for development to compete with DSLR's.

My two cents.

The best camera is the one you have with you.

When the Cubs won the World Series we got an interesting comparison. The Tribune who has a staff of very qualified and outfitted photographers captured a front page picture with a fast telephoto of the players - The Sun Times who had decided to fire their photographers and crowd source pictures from fans printed theirs. These are the differences

What are the differences at issue with these two photos? The color of the shirts? Which one is closer to the actual shirts? The composition? How do we know that the Tribune photo is not a cropped shot similar to the Sun-Times photo? How do we know what EITHER looked like in its recorded-by-camera state?

My experience with film would suggest that the Tribune shot was pretty underexposed (thin) and some enhancement was needed to derive adequate contrast. Doesn't seem like a good job, but I'm still new to Lightroom/Photoshop and I don't know what the raw file looked like.

And that's why 99.9% of the time I leave the house, I have a "real" camera with me. I do tend to forget to take my cell phone with me.

A crummy, cheap camera in your pocket is better than a $30,000 state-of-the-art camera at home.

I don't waste my time. You shoot with what you want and I shoot with what I want. Case closed.

It all depends on what you want to do with your photography. The "creative controls" on phones are only digital simulations of things like shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. If you're doing a wide shot, with no need for the real controls of a camera, a phone is fine. Remember the old adage, "The best camera is the one you have with you."

Only idiots believe that. It isn't worth arguing about. If any of them have cameras they are trying to get rid of pick them up for as little as you can and re-sell them at a profit. I'm talking DSLR cameras. Film cameras are more or less obsolete I'm afraid.

When cell phones do more than wide angle photography and have 30mp full frame sensors then we'll talk. Don't see them reaching out to 600mm or zooming in for a Macro shot without a cheap plastic add on's either.

30K? Okay here's a UHH survey. Who here has a 30K camera at home?
I sure don't own a Hasselblad, nor would I want one.

You can't really do much with a smart phone camera. Mine has 2 rear cameras, for wide and zoom. But the application is a lot more narrow than as DSLR. Most people who use phones are not really disappointed when they miss a shot. They're got 3,000 others stored on it. And it really doesn't take much of a camera to have the images look good on a tiny screen.

[quote=MrBob]Time to move on... Why this same question all the time ? YES, Dedicated cameras are only going to be relevant to folks like us in the " BUBBLE ". Phone cams will get to the point where they will be desirable to 99 % of the population and we will be in the other 1 %. A person wanting to send his or her selfie around the world could not care less about hand held shots in low light... OUR STUFF DOESN'T GIVE THE NEW GENERATION WHAT THEY WANT ! Pure and simple; way too complicated for this enlightened generation and NOT the connectivity they want.

Agreed! Let’s enjoy the art of photography with cameras and all the expensive gears while we can :)
