I use flash drives quite a bit to give files to other people or move them from one machine to another. I also store some things on them. I know I can use Google Drive, but sometimes a flash drive is better. It seems like I'm always needing a larger drive than what I have on hand. In the old days, I had a 250MB drive. Now I have several 32GB drives. I see a Samsung 128GB flash drive on Amazon for $25, and I'm tempted.

What are your thoughts on uses and sizes of flash drives?

Very handy and size does matter!

At that price why hesitate? you can never have too much portable storage.

Hi group,
I send all magazine articles via flash drive and purchase these in bulk on eBay. They work fine for me - https://www.ebay.com/itm/wholesale-lot-bulk-10-PACK-usb-flash-drive-thumb-storage-jump-Disk-pen-stick/223274285768?hash=item33fc2f3ac8:m:mWPru2jLp26RLTkEasdNGqg. Take care & ...

I'm a flash drive junkie... When sharing pictures that I will never get back the flash drive, I like the smaller size flash drives , but they are hard to find. The 16 and 32 seem standard now. When I want to back up my pictures in my hard drive , I use the 256, or 128 depending on how big the backup is. But yes , I am always looking for good deals on flash drives...

I use SD cards for my shoots. After copying to my computer I usually give the SD card to the customer if along with the edited versions. If we are talking just a few shots for friends I just email or PM.
Just curious. What are the pros & cons for thumb drive vs. SD cards?

But suppose I have just a couple of really large eggs?

I carry a handfull of 4 to 16gig flashdrives and have never needed any bigger. Memory chips for the camera are 8 to 64 gig and I use the 16 and 64 the most.

Still remember in 1995(?) buying an external storage unit that sat on the floor and was about 2 foot square. Needed 30 amp power to run mostly the cooling fans - it was one gigabyte, a monster in it's time.

As our family replace their cameras with ever more capable ones that also handle video the size of SD cards have become ever larger. My wife and I love taking foreign touring holidays India, China, South Africa during which we can take a few thousand photos and meet other travellers with varied photographic ability. We are often asked if we would mind sharing our images particularly with the less confident. Obviously there are the photo sharing websites, Dropbox etc.etc. but there are subscription fees and also people are unfamiliar with those services. My simplest solution has been to simply dig out the older, lower capacity SD cards copy images onto them (sometimes 16GB) and then put them in the post. Even the least capable amateurs know how to upload images from cards in their point and shoots and have the SD slots on their laptop/desktops. The recipients return them with any or all of their images as a swap and we sometimes get to see things that we missed.

If I'm giving them away or "loaning" (as in, gone forever) I go small and cheap. For personal documents and pictures, the bigger and better the quality is fine for me. I have never needed anything bigger than a 32gb. I still use my external hard drive.

LOL, 1986 bought 10 units for the computer centre, each unit was about 2 feet by 4 feet, removable spindle pack, 8 or 10 platters, 300MB. They were mirrored so net storage was 1.5GB. Cost was hundreds of thousands. Then the power management system and the air conditioning to keep the temperature down.

I love the new technology!

I use 32 GB thumb drives to give to people. I don't ever expect to see them again as they are photos of a Boy Scout's Eagle Service Project along with his Eagle Ceremony.

In what respect?

That is a lot of data one one card. Should it fail or be lost, there would be a lot of data gone. using multiple smaller cards might be safer...

I'm actually disappointed that I cannot find flash drives in the 2GB size because I too like to give photos away and it's usually not that many in the set.

I bought a couple of those too (Sandisk). A lot of storage for just a little money. The issue is that they are very slow, in fact slower than my WD external (spinning) drives.
