Good day everyone, my previous computer has finally taken to not wanting to do its job. Any recommendations on required hardware or complete systems to look at? Im not a mac guy so PC info please.

These guys spec and build systems specifically for photo editing and video editing. Everyone has their own idea - not of what you should consider, but rather what fits THEIR criteria for budget, software, expectations, etc. but these guys build and benchmark lots of systems. At the very least, you'll have a good idea what to look for.

And just watch - the mac fans will try to lead you in their directions, with stuff like "I switched to mac 55 yrs ago and never looked back" or "I've never gotten a virus" or "the mac I bought 15 yrs ago is still working fine" and other drivel. It's just a matter of time before they come out of the woodwork . . .

PCs are OK, but you should really consider getting a mac. I've been using a 27" iMac for the last 5 or so years. Never a problem.

Bob, the closest anyone should get to a mac is the one you get with fries and a soft drink.

Yes, just wait for the Guys who switched to Apple before Windows existed as they hated CP/M. Windows 7 or 10 is nothing like DOS.

I feel for you, my 2011 iBuyPower gamer I bought for editing died also.
I decided to just have one built:
https://photographylife.com/the-ultimate-pc-build-for-photography-needs
I went with the build on the second page of this article.
Now some stuff I didn't need like the case and data droves - I am reusing my full tower case and the data drives that are already in it.
So I got a new CPU, motherboard, 32 GB of RAM with plans to go to 64, cpu cooler, the new faster simm style SSD drive, power pack and video card.
The store was out of the motherboard on this list so instead of waiting I just went for the next model up. Total was just under $1700 plus what my tech will charge to assemble it, may be ready Monday. Then I have to reload all my apps. I am not looking forward to that at all.
And the CPU, video card and RAM from the old one are going into our special needs boys computer which will give him a cpu a full tier (with liquid cooler) above what he has, 4X the RAM a video card with 2X the memory. His train simulators should fly after that.

Mac is probably the most overrated and overpriced PC brand of all time.
The lack of viruses (which is bs) simply means that hackers agree that the brand isn't worth their time.

The company linked (Puget) may be decent but it has a couple of red flags.
1. Overpriced (which is why they push the amount per month)
2. Cute names for the different levels.

If you know someone that is capable, it's best to ask them to buy the parts and build it for you. You'll save half or more.
Good Luck

I used Apple around 1978 (before Windows existed). I switched to Windows when the Mac came out because Apple was all proprietary and PCs were open source. There were lots of third party suppliers for Windows and the Mac didn't have any of the hardware I needed.

Still using Win10 (without any major problems) although I did switch from Android to iPhone last year.

Dell XPS15 with 32 Gb RAM, 2 Tb SSD and touch screen. Dell's port replicators make it easy to add multiple external monitors via HDMI ports. And, they are having a Graduation/Father's Day sale right now.

Whatever you decide on, cram as much RAM into it as you can afford.

Climber - before you decide on a computer, you'll need to give some thought to budget, what applications you will be running on it, how many pictures do you have and what you take on a yearly basis, do you do a lot of layering when editing, etc. etc etc. PCs are great in that you can customize and fine tune the configuration to efficiently address your needs as opposed to the generic, off-the-shelf stuff you see on store shelves, or that other company's goods. But will concede that with the new leadership, they are finally catching up - but at a significant price premium.

You won't want to edit photos on a 15 inch laptop screen. If you're going to use external monitors with it, do you need a laptop? (The answer could be yes depending on what else you're going to do with the computer.) Desktop computers with the same or better performance tend to be cheaper. Some of the AIO computers are not too shabby, but you may have to add extra RAM yourself for an additional cost.

Hey Gene, have you tried any of the new AMD CPUs for PP? A year ago, I would have recommended an Intel I7 hands down, but the new AMD Threadripper and Epyx series of processors are right there in terms of performance with the hottest Intels. As a matter of fact, the world’s fastest exascale supercomputer is being built at Oak Ridge by Cray using not Intel, but AMD processors. Who’d a thunk it a year or two ago? AMD is back. An AMD 1950X 16 core is about half the price of the closest Intel I9 in terms of equivalent performance.
