Thanks Ron. Yes, I agree. It wouldn't have caught fire on its own. I put it out with water after I'd finished taking photos.

It's a bit of a mystery--rope can't be just ignited with a match, so it must have had some fairly intense heat applied for a considerable time. Earl.

I went to an old wooden jetty out the front of my place to photograph some ducks (as I often do) & saw a nylon(?) rope on fire at the end of the small jetty. There was nobody else around, so I have no idea how it caught fire. Downloading is recommended.

D500/Nikon 55-300mm.

I hope you put out the fire after shooting, Earl.

Thanks, Tom--yes, a bucket of water soon doused it.

Earl.

I think that I would have extinguished the fire rather than photograph it, Photography seems like a lower priority than potentially burning a whole dock. Once a heavy creosoted dock is involved, the fires are very difficult to extinguish. The deck planking doesn't appear to have creosote but the structural timbers below the decking often have creosote preservative and are quite difficult to get water onto due to being covered with decking planks.

There was absolutely no panic. The timber showed no signs of catching fire & the jetty/pier is small, fairly remote, & unused (apart from some local kids who occasionally fish from it). If I thought there was any danger, or there was a boat moored in the immediate vicinity, I most certainly would have extinguished it pronto. Earl.
