A Tough Bird...to Shoot

Every year we have Orioles that spend time at our Hummingbird feeders until it's time to head back someplace warmer for the winter. They are difficult to photo because they move as soon as they sense anyone is looking at them.

I got these through the kitchen window and realize it's time for some window cleaning.

I may have to set up the camera (7D with 150-600 Tamron lens on a tripod) outside and use the remote shutter release. The aim would be chancy, but the images might be sharper if there are any keepers.

Nice images Vicki. I tried the setup as you mentioned with the tripod and remote trigger. I probably missed more due to the birds not landing where I thought they would, but it is worth a try. Cleaning the windows would probably be a little easier. 😊 That last image is too funny.

Well done. What a beautiful bird. Maybe you could set up some kind of blind to sit quietly behind???

Yup. Shooting through windows is always sketchy. Regardless, you caught what you could under your circumstance. I’ve never seen those orioles. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Vicki, Through the window or not, those are nice photos. We don't have these birds where I live. They are really beautiful. The really pointed beak is interesting. It must be how they first decided they could feed at a Hummingbird feeder.

Very good series, Vicki, it wasn't that hard after all, well done.

Nicely done, Vicki. I shoot through my door glass all the time. It's not the best method but sometimes it's the only method.

Beautiful photos and bird.
I use a remote to good effect to shoot Vultures feeding on road kill. Set camera ten feet away and cover a bit.
The birds will hear the clicks so I shoot numerous in quick succession. Portrates only MOM. could love.

Well done regardless. I shoot these all the time and they are camera shy. What works for me is a portable blind or the tripod with gimbal set up to shoot through an open house window as another option. The open window option is nicer because I can move around undetected. vz

Many thanks for the suggestions Jan. I've gotten shots of other birds through the open window but my HBird setup is a little farther off to the side. Another good option would be to move it so it's more in line with the window. Gee, clean the windows or move the feeder? Hmmm.
