Years ago (pre-digital) I went on a family holiday to Majorca, with wife and three small children. At customs check, My photo' outfit was scrutinised by security staff. Nikon camera plus Novoflex follow-focus lens. Focus was done by a squeeze trigger, on the barrel between camera body and lens. I started with the 280mm , and later added the 400mm and 640mm . Cannot remember which lenses I had at the time of travel, but it was the focus trigger section that had the security men hot under the collar. All was explained, and we carried on to our destination.

There was once a company named "Porter Camera", you could easily buy a gunstock set up from them. Unfortuantely they went the way of the 'Do DO' bird.

The hood seems to be half the size of the lens, assuming that is the hood.

Why do people spend money on things that increase vibrations in your images?

TSA will say it is a gun part, a rifle stock, and it is going to be seized.

The average education level of a typical TSA agent is some high school, if your lucky. Good luck with taking anything on board.

Forget about TSA. I wouldn't even use that thing. I don't want to be shot at (with bullets).

800mm?

It is the latest version of the Nikon 200-400 f4 VRII. If you put it on a cropped sensor, you would have a field of view of 300-600 f4. But not quite 800mm. Unless of course you put a 1.4 on it. Then on a full frame, you would have a 300 to 600 but on a cropped sensor you would have an angle of view of 450 to 900. Now we are talking 800, even more!!

I see that you have been through basic training. That is some setup you have there. I can't imagine what sort of subjects you shoot with it. Are you part of a spy agency? Maybe you shoot errant husbands with their mistresses for avenging wives. Whatever; the cost of such a rig would bankrupt me.

Several years ago I bought a similar stock from SharpShooter Industries. I had some real concerns about using the setup in my community. I was worried that someone might actually call the police to report a man with a rifle. I went to the local police station to tell them where I lived and if they got a call like that, it was probably just me. They told me that they must respond to any call of a man with a rifle. I did not want to be in a position of a police officer behind me telling me to drop my weapon. I did not use rifle stock in my community. I do use it occasionally in the woods and quite frankly, I don't use it very often.

These are thoughts I didn't have until I got the stock but they are real concerns. I would recommend using it where people are expecting to see stuff like that - sporting events perhaps. I do use it occasionally in the woods and quite frankly, I don't use it very often.

I would imagine if you're using that to shoot you'd be shooting at speeds where vibration isn't a problem.
