Does anyone recommend a shop that does high quality printing of portraits and other people shots?
I am concerned about color accuracy and ink-fading problems. I want prints that can be hung on a wall and expected to look good for a good number of years.
I've looked at places like MPIX and Bay Photo.
The prices look reasonable, but I wonder about the actual quality.
(But I don't want to go to a shop that charges $100 per print)
Where do professional photographers go?
Thank you.

Those are two of the best - quality AND price. You'll get lots of recommendations - including places like Costco and certain chain drug-stores - suggesting that price isn't everything. You're going to have to do an Excel chart to find out which (of many many recommendations) is the "audience choice".

I do most of my own printing, but for what I can't do (and that is really quite a bit), I use https://www.americanframe.com/art-and-photo-printing.aspx for really top-quality and moderate price, and (if you're going to do a lot of printing) http://colorplak.com.

Nothing wrong with Bay Photo’s, Miller’s, or even Costco. Ask about archival prints. A matte finish or Lustre prints look very nice.

C-type prints - those that are printed on photo paper and wet processed - a typical 8x10 will cost about $3 - are not "high quality".

Bay also offers inkjet prints - aka giclée - on high quality cotton rag papers - for considerably more $$$. An 8x10 can cost from $23 to$25 depending on which of the 18 different papers they offer.

The other concern you expressed - color accuracy - is entirely under your control as the photographer. If color is important - you'll need to use an end-to-end color managed workflow. Use an Xrite ColorChecker Passport to create a profile that will nail the color in the capture. Use a wide gamut 8 or 10 bit display, and profile it with an Xrite i1 Display Pro (or better), and ask the print lab to send you printer profiles for the ink and paper you select. Use the profile to view the image in soft-proof. The profile will show the image as the printer will print it, and if something is out of whack you'll be able to see it there.

Print longevity will outlast you, if properly matted with archival (not buffered) materials and adhesives, and sealed in a frame with a paper backing. Coating a giclée print with a preservative will help extend it's life.

I print my own portraits on a Canon Pro10. However, when I need a large print or a very high quality Black and White print I use Digital Silver Imaging in Belmont MA. (digitalsilverimaging.com). Their Black and White Prints revery high quality. They use their own portal so you can upload any size image for them to print.

BayPhoto and MPIX are great. I think MPIX has the edge on skin tones. Also check out White Wall, and White Hall.

I've used them for years, beginning with Cibachrome (later Ilfochrome) images in the 1990s, and now Epson UltraChrome. They also do custom silver prints, and archival framing. You'll have to call and see if they do work over the internet; I've always dealt with them in person.
