From the time Ken Rockwell reviewed this camera and after some other reviews
bought the RX10 III. The first RX10 that had this Zeiss super zoom that worked great.
At times I see images that seem brighter and have a specific look unlike my other
Sony's. It does do well at long zoom shots even hand helded. I posted here about
shooting an event at a college in Miami. My son didnt want me to get out of my seat
but cover where he was on the panel on stage. I shot first row with an angle stage left.
I had different zoom views on video and B roll of the room. It handled the stage light well.
I shoot soccer ground level with it. A cruise ship shooting long shots of people being
people on another ship. It is F2.4-4 (I wish is what like former RX10's one F stop)
I have not stopped liking this camera. Other photographers
balked at the price. Hey a Canon 70 200 high level could be $2500.
You get a Zeiss 24-600mm lens that is really good. Once is a while is has one
flaw in a darker area zoomed far it may hunt once-in-awhile. You have to go to
manual focus or just start the shot again.
I could see owning 2 of these and no other cameras. And a little blue is some shots. Might be my settings. Am I nuts.

If you really like the RX10M3 you will have an experience that I cannot aptly describe in on a PG family oriented forum if you were to get an RX10M4. Better AutoAF, slightly better menu organization, and a few other meaningful improvements if you shoot video.

I do not, however, consider it a replacement for my full frame dslrs and lenses.

"Am I nuts?"

It might be more nuts to have a bag full of cameras and lenses when you can only use one at a time.

Adding an RX10 to one's camera collection is a constant temptation. I can never rationalize it because I have so much other gear I like.

However the answer changes if the question is "What to do if all your camera gear is lost or stolen and not insured?" If that were to happen, I'd probably have an RX10 III or IV on then next FedEx airplane from B&H!

I bought a Sony RX10iii a year ago - mainly because lugging round my Nikon was becoming difficult with a dodgy shoulder My "main" camera is Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 150-500 lens. My interest is wildlife. My intention was to take the Sony when there was walking involved but take the Nikon on safari (boat or jeep). We are off to Brazil next Sunday (boats & jeeps), wildlife watching & both cameras are going with me. I still feel more comfortable with the Nikon (having had Nikons for years) & the Nikon menus beat the Sony menus hands down. However, particularly with the Sony enhanced zoom engaged, I'm almost getting better pictures with the Sony.

Have a look at these two. The first one is Nikon, the second, Sony

Of course the RX10iii could do as an only camera for many people. The iv is even better, but the iii is fine. I don't use my iv as an only, but I could. My primary addition is something with a wider angle ... my Sony a6000 with 10-18 lens fills this void. However, my preference remains two m4/3 bodies with different zooms staying on each. Which zooms? ... depends on what I'm shooting that day.

Thanks for the interesting responses. They came so fast on the post that maybe I hit
on something here. I will tell you I love Nikons. I owned an AV company in the 80's going into 90's.
We have cabinet full of Nikon bodies for the shooters. Always had a Nikon. I just resold my nikon FM2 film camera to KEH for over 200 bucks. Recent years I expected Nikon's to be perfect but they weren't.
and the D800 was good but problematic. Some cards didnt work and some did? focus issue?

I went Sony because of mirrorless and I liked the images. So now having the a7s II (best camera I have every owned) a6300, RX100 4, a6000, PXW-X70 camcorder 5 years old 10 bit great video.
One thought is I believe Sony the great sensor maker and seller to Nikon and others has
saved the best a 1" layered sensor that some have written changed the game of size.
I wont sell my a7s II. and the few good lens I have. I sat at lunch on a deck with my grandkids
and family and sitting in my seat shot a surfer guy on the fake surf ride on boardwalk.
No struggling just pick up camera use zoom lever and shoot. I loved the image. Sony tricked up the software on the RX10 series and put a great zeiss lens it is different then all these other fine cameras. Thanks for sharing.

Same here. No need to tend to avoiding
dust or drizzle with no lens swapping. No
huge SLRs offer the ease of carrying two
with lenses already in place.

At present, I have 3 different small body
matched pairs, of 2 brands, and acoarst
a few adapters :-)

I used it as the only one in Patagonia with the A6000 as backup. Got wonderful outdoors pictures. Lighter than my Canon DSLR with 3 exchangeable lenses. Always carry spare batteries in your pocket.

My Sony has a Zeiss 24-720 mm lens for $450.00. I get up to and including sharp 20X30 prints and I can shoot in Raw, and, I can put my camera into my shirt pocket or a belt pouch. I am happy with it, does everything I need it to do.

The 600mm is not long enough if you do birds. Otherwise the camera does everything very well.

Really? How long do you need? 600mm is perfect with my Sony RX10 M4.

I bought the Sony RX10 III for a cruise last year, to carry instead of my Canon 5DIII and various lenses. It does not replace the Canon body or glass for me but it takes great pics with only one lens, which can be great for travel.

It can take wonderful pictures but I have two complaints: Autofocus is very slow if trying to focus on birds anywhere near 600mm. And the Sony menu system is horrible (at least if you have years of experience with the Canon system which I am used to).

The III is a really good camera. I hear the IV focus is much better but have no experience there. Will I upgrade to the IV?? Not until Sony comes out with something "later and greater" so that the price on the IV comes way down, like it has on the III. I bought the III on ebay last fall used but just about "as new" for about $600. At that price, it is a GREAT camera in my opinion.

The IV solves the focus limits on the III. Lighting fast! No hunting! Don’t think Sony will come out with a later and greater version of this camera any time soon....it’s Perfect!
