I live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and our biggest attraction is Falls Park. The Big Sioux River winds it's way around my community before it reaches the Falls. All of these pictures I had taken in 2010. Our own river is one of the top 9, that's right, I said 9 filthiest rivers in the entire country, and it's all because of the runoff of dirt along it's banks. Fortunately our drinking water supply comes from a vast, underground aquifer before it goes through a purification system. The last 3 pictures I had taken were down at the falls during the Christmas season in 2010. The falls were brightly lit at night with a color light system that would change color every few minutes. In the far off background of my first picture you can see the remains of the old Queen Bee Flour Mill. The mill did not produce very much flour before it was destroyed in a fire. The little grey shack you see just above the falls housed a water wheel which was used in generating the power to grind wheat into flour. In the 2nd picture there is a large building, with a pedestrian bridge above the falls in front of it. This building once housed 3 hydro-electric generators
that ran off the current of the falls itself. These generators originally supplied the first electrical lighting
for our downtown area. This building is now a dining establishment. People have lost their lives here at Falls Park, last year someone's 3 year old child fell into the raging current of the falls, and her body was never recovered.
