Use the filter as directed.
If it is the same Hoya I have it is marked with the range to use it at. Go beyond the markings and you get the pattern.
I experimented quite a bit before I got the x pattern and when I did I noted I was out of the range marked on the filter.Here is a series done with the Hoya ND filter. There were many more but these were at minimum to max and then beyond the marked range. Finally is the filter showing the range to be used. Yes I got the x as shown but only when the marked range was exceeded.
All were hand held.

Your are absolutely right and I don’t complain I got this filter for $25. Since I have the breakthrough filter the Hoya filter is collecting dusk now......

If I remember the Hoya was in the $100.00 range.
Today it is more difficult to get a premium quality for under $75.00 it seems.
