This Memorial Day, I’ll remember a young 18 year old army soldier that died in VietNam in 1969. He was assigned to our unit, and compared to combat soldiers in “the bush”, we were relatively safe. We were a fire control computer repair group, and as such, while we had the regular mortar and rocket attacks, ground attacks on our perimeter were infrequent. This young PFC was “gung ho” - he was bored with being on base in DaNang and wanted to get into the fight. So he 1049’d until he was finally assigned to the Americal division (as I recall) as a door gunner on a Huey. Two weeks after he transferred out, we read his name in the Stars and Stripes - KIA. Rest In Peace brother.
