Alaska in the end of May... probably chilly... and rainy. Be ready for that. We went the end of June, it was 80 in Fairbanks and the farther south we went the colder it got, 50+ in Ketchikan. The lodge at Denali was sold out of warm jackets.

Our first Alaska trip is end of July. Driving south-central and Kenai Peninsula. I’m a beginner with a Sony a6000. I desperately wanted the Tamron 18-400 and was advised it just needed the Sigma MC-11 adapter. Both were on sale so I jumped at it. 😔 That combo did NOT work on my Sony—auto-focus was useless. No Focus Magnifier. Had to return everything. (Not able to spend considerably more for other Metabones adapter possibility.) Very disappointed but will just be content with whatever I can get with my two kit lenses and relish every moment of our adventure!

Same here. But happy to have what I have and we will make the best of it. The correct attitude me thinks.

When my wife and I took the cruse to Alaska and side trips, she used a D70, 18-70, 70-300 non VR. The combination took wonderful pictures which we enlarged for the wall. Some are still hanging. Others she used in a scape book which won several awards. Your equipment is plenty good to do the job without buying one new thing. Enjoy the trip.

That’s for sure! Just being there will be wonderful, rain or shine, bears or not!

Going in July. Leaving from Seattle for seven days. I am taking all 3 of my lenses just in case. My largest is the canon 100-400MM. I am using a canon D50 that I am here have had for about six years.

I've been to Alaska twice, 2007 and 2014, both end of August and the weather was quite nice then. I was using the Nikkor 18-200VR zoom on a D50 (2007) and D7000 (2014). I think you will do fine with the 2 lenses you plan to take.

Have a great time and enjoy the trip!

Leave on a two week vacation to Alaska on Tuesday. So,.....packing.

Want to stay as light as possible and have been thinking my best lens options for use on the D7200 will be my Sigma 17-70, 1.9-2.4 and my Nikkor 70-300, 4.5-6.3

I haven no greater telephoto. Other lenses are a 105 Macro and my 35mm prime.

My best options??

Take what you currently enjoy shooting with. Simple...

Did the cruise, train ride to Denali. We did a last minute small plane guided tour around Denali (Mt. McKinley) and captured superb shots suitable for gallery display. A storm came in after that. Got lucky.

I used a Nikon D810 and 28-300. It performed well in limited space.

Also good point on wiping things down and handwashing. I got a GI bug (food borne) that made me so sick for 3 hours I thought wife would end up planting me there. It is a $15,000 plane ride out if you are medi-vac'd.

Don't forget that the A6000 has the clear image zoom feature that effectively doubles the reach of your lens. It only works in JPEG mode, though. So if you already have the kit 55-210 lens, CIZ will afford you and effective reach of 420mm without perceptive loss of image quality.

Yes, I just found out about that! Will try it out on trip to WA next week.

What you have suggested is what you need. Been there twice and found nothing beyond those focal lengths necessary. Have a great trip and post some results when you return.

Wife and I have been there twice and I sed a Pentax K-x with kit lens (18-55) and a 55-300 which was satisfactory. We weren't on a cruise, flew into Anchorage, and drove to many places. Unfortunately we saw very little wildlife. Loved the landscape and the vegetation. Would like to go back again.

What you are taking should be more than adequate. Like others said, take sufficient batteries and memory and if possible download to a tablet or computer daily.

I think you will be okay with the 17-70 and the 70-300. My wife and I along with two friends took the Alaska vacation a few years back and my camera equipment was a Canon 70D with a 70-200 L: 2.8 IS II USM lens and the Canon 2X III extender and a Canon G 11 back up camera. I got many good pictures with all my set ups and a few to delete. If some one has not already suggested this.....shoot to photo merge some pictures of the mountain ranges and of course other places. Have fun.

I tried to post these up with my original reply but my phone connection was not cooperating. Here are a few low resolution out takes from our trip 2 years ago. I envy you. Alaska is the BEST! We will go again to try and capture northern lights. So much to see and not enough time. Each port offers unique opportunities.

Jim Eads, is that last photo of the captive (injured) eagle in Juneau? Or maybe one at the Raptor Center in Sitka?

If anyone is curious, my Alaska photos (both trips) are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/collections/72157702714958041/.
