You are correct in writing that most would not notice--it is close. Here's the determination of the actual position, according to the laws of perspective.

Bob, This isn't the picture I was commenting on. This picture that you showed is the one that he changed and extended the image to the left so he could move the sun. The image I commented on was his first image on the first page of this thread.

Of course that makes no difference for the placement of the sun, except that the original has no shadow end, which would make the Sun's exact height impossible to place from that shadow alone.

I knew it! Rats! I should have paid more attention to my astronomy and triginometry lessons in high school. The teachers told me that some day I will need these skills and I'll be sorry that I was remiss. Next time I'll
consult my sextant and protractor.

Nah, you were right. Correct perspective shows how close you were. Did you miss the fine print in the Appendix of the Artistic License: "Artists lie to tell the truth"? You were plenty close enough!
