The title says it all. I have the D500 and am learning and loving it. I have the sigma 50-100 and its nice, but I need something wider. What say you guys?

The Sigma 18-35 ART is an incredible medium wide angle zoom for Dx cameras. It was my primary lens for years with a D7000 - D7100 before I transitioned to full frame.

I have a D500 and the Nikon 16-80 f/2.8 Is so smooth and sharp. It's what a crop sensor needs and will keep up with the D500's fast focus system. I love it and is my main lens.

I have the Nikon 17-55 and it was a fantastic lens back when it came out.
Would have been one of the HolyTrinity if Nikon didn’t go full-frame.
I think it wa s the best DX zoom lens Nikon made.

But.... there are several interesting alternatives out there now, like the Sigma 18-35 1.8.
Would be interested in what others who use one have to say about it.

I would get the Nikon 16-80 unless the faster aperture of the Sigma is absolutely necessary. Even though the price is comparable, I like the extra reach of the Nikon, the fact that the Nikon also makes the camera, and the Nikon lens is much lighter.

I own the Nikon 17-55. It acts like and looks like the Nikon 24-70. First of all they are both made in Japan, I stand corrected, the 17-55 WAS made in Japan.
I find this lens just as sharp as my 24-70 F/2.8, which is saying something because the 24-70 is SHARP. The 17-55 of course gives the same field of view as the 24-70 on your D500, which, I find anyway, an ideal lens for almost everything.
The 17-55 is not a light weight, I would not want it around my neck all day, unless of course, I used in on my favorite BLACK RAPID strap, then carrying that lens around all day would not be too bad.
The range of the 17-55 is better than the 18-35 especially at the top end, the 24-70 is almost a portrait lens, but also wide enough for good architectural shooting. The Sigma will give you a field of view of 27-52.5 mm. So it looks like the Nikon gives you more at both ends. The Sigma however is a 1.8 lens vs. a 2.8 lens, so chalk one up for Sigma, but with the ISO range of the D500, one stop is nothing for that camera.
The 17-55 is built like a tank, and will give you years of service and after years of service you should get almost what you paid for it on resale.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
Yes, the 17-55 is a real value, I got mine on Ebay, Mint in the box for a really great price.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

The Nikon 17-55mm is really the only pro level DX lens Nikon makes. It's outstanding but it doesn't have vibration reduction. Nikon just discontinued the 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 DX VR lens but there are still some new ones around. I have two of them. I used them on my D500 and D7000. It's an excellent lens and the vibration reduction is a plus. There's also the new 16-80mm f/2.8-4 DX VR lens but that lens is overpriced.

I too bought a D500 with the 16-80 Nikkor lens. It is an excellent combination for street and indoor photography. I generally have a 28-300 on the D500, when I don't have a long lens on it, and the 16-80 spends a lot of time on my D7200.

Thanks if nothing else I will certainly look into the Black Rapid Strap. The sigma lens that I own has some weight.

The 17-55 f2.8 from what I know is an excellent optic. No VR if that is important to you meaning that a tripod is the way to shoot with this lens or raise the ISO speed for handheld images, not always desirable.
Perhaps this could be of interest to you.

I agree. When I bought my D500 from Cameta last year, it came with a Nikon 16-80 f/2.8, and I've learned to appreciate it. Even thought I bought a D850 a few months ago, I still take the D500 out with the 16-80.
