I went through a phase of not wanting to carry a bulky camera around with me and the only answer I was interested in was something pocketable. There are some very good premium compacts available just now. If it turns out he doesn't like the A6000, try pointing him in the direction of the Sony RX100iii or the Canon G7xii. Or if it turns out the budget is extendable, a Lumix ZS100/200 or Lumix LX100.

Canon, Sony a mount and Nikon, lots of used lenses. Sony E mount, the 6XXX series is smaller and just as good, but lenses a bit more expensive. I don't know much about Pentax, but they are also good. are
