Our Canon Pro frustrates me in that it seems like it takes forever to make up it's mind about the simplest stuff. Turn it on and it's a minute or two before it will print, what in the world is it doing, and how can it possibly take so darn long? That and it uses up ink. But the printed images are perfect, there is that, that's why we have it.

From what I understand, part of the startup delay is because the print head has a heater of some fashion that helps prevent ink clogs from dried up ink. I know that I have a Canon Pro 100 and love it, beautiful prints, have never had a clog and I use it sporadically. Sometimes it might be a month or so between prints and when I do print I might print 6 or more prints at a time.
With the deals that are offered several times a year, you can usually get a brand new printer with a 50 pack of semi-gloss 13 x 19 paper for around $100.00 bucks from B&H or Adorama along with free shipping.
I’ve had my Pro 100 for about 2 1/2 years it’s absolutely no issues at all. If it quit tomorrow, I would get another Pro 100 in a heartbeat.

I have been using a Canon Pixma Pro 1 for the last 4 years; it was expensive, but it produces the best prints I have ever seen. Prior to that I used an Epson- nuff said.

Take a look at the Pro 9500 Mark II. I bought mine several years ago, and still available today. It makes wonderful prints.

Seriously, don’t turn it off. Also that’s a great time to brew/mix a beverage it’ll be printing when you return.

I have decided on a Canon printer to replace a HP. This new printer will mostly be used for photos up to probably 11x14. I do want the photos to be high quality. Any suggestions on a printer model? Thanks. I also want it to work from a cord, not wireless. Possible?

To make prints that size you'll need 13" wide format printer.

The Canon Pro-100 is a very good value... often on sale at a steep discount.... currently $150 after a $250 mail in rebate. It's an 8-color, dye-based Claria ink set costs about $125 for a full replacement set. Those inks are rated for 100+ years (much better than dye-based inks in the past).

If you want more permanence, Canon Pro-10 costs considerably more ($450 after a $250 mail in rebate), but uses more archival pigment-based Lucia inks rated for 200+ years. It uses a set of 10 inks that cost about $135 for a full set.

Both the above come with a "starter set" of inks and a 50-sheet pack of Canon 13x19" paper.

Personally, I like the look of dye-based inks on glossy and semi-gloss papers... and prefer pigment inks on matte finish papers.

Both Pro-10 and Pro-100 can be used via a USB cable or wirelessly... it's your choice.

My one complaint about the Canon printers is that their ink cartridges are pretty small. My HP B9180's eight inks cost almost 3X as much, but were much larger. I'd guess the HP's cartridges contained 4X or 5X as much ink as the Canon printers do.

EDIT: Canon no longer makes Pro-1 or Pro-9500 printer models. If interested in one of those, you might be able to buy refurbished direct from Canon USA website.

The Canon Pixma Pro-10 is a great printer. It is more expensive and uses a different ink type that is more permanent for prints.

Actually Amazon continues to sell the Pro-9500 Mark II printer. Pricy, $950 I believe, but well worth it, at least to me.

The suggestion of the Pro 100 is very good. You will definitely want a printer with 13" x 19" capability even though you only plan on 11" x 14" prints at this time. Once you see a larger print, the 11" x 14" will not be satisfactory.
Also if you begin using non-Canon papers, some papers require an extra margin on the edges so you nee the larger capacity to even print 11" x 14" prints.

You will enjoy the new capabilities.

PIXMA Pro 100. Shop the major online retailers for deals. It can be had for almost nothing if you find the right sale. Sometimes Canon bundles it with a camera, and the buyer doesn't want the printer, so they unload it on eBay or Craigslist after clipping the rebate UPC from the box.

This printer consistently gets high marks from users on UHH. It will print up to 13x19", so 12x18 and 11x14 are well within its capabilities.

Hi Bill, about a month and a half ago, B&H had a one day sale on the PIXMA Pro 100 for $79.95 after discount and manufacturer's $250 mail in rebate. The deal also included a 50 sheet box of Canon 13" x 19" paper. I bought one and it really produces high quality prints, however like any photo printer it can be expensive to keep it supplied with ink when you make usually make large prints as I do.

Yep. I've said many times here that saving money on prints is NOT a reason to buy an inkjet printer. People who want cheap prints should just find a good professional color lab.

But... You get what you pay for. Inkjet printing allows control over the process, the widest possible color gamut, a huge array of paper surfaces and other substrates, the best longevity/fade-resistant print life, privacy, immediacy, and other advantages I probably mentioned somewhere else.

I have a PIXMA PRO-10. I like it a lot. I only use it for photos and have a canon all in one for other printing. It uses 10 pigment inks and applies a clear coat.

I replaced an HP printer with a Canon several years ago. I haven't been all that pleased with the Canon. I think next time I will go back to HP. The Canon tends to use a lot of ink.
