Did a similar trip a few years ago and would like to go back, enjoy!

Good choice on camera equipment, this is one of those situations where less is more - you will be having to carry your belongings on some occasions.

2. You may want to reconsider what you are taking. On trips I only take a pocket Sony Zeiss 24-750 mm lens and a pop up viewfinder. I get up to and including 20X30 prints if needed. I have a belt pouch for it. Sony HX-99V

Appreciate your input billnikon. Question for you.....is that a typo for 24-750mm lens? Can't seem to find it. And will it fit a nikon mount or do I need an adapter? Please advise, thanks.

It's the Sony HX99 and the lens is actually a 24-720mm zoom. Great pocket camera, great lens. Gotta have small fingers, though. The controls are tiny on the back of the camera. Another good choice would be the Panasonic Lumix ZS70 or the newer ZS80. Same size sensor and lens as the Sony HX99, but the camera is a bit larger, as are the controls, but it's still pocketable.

If you are a street photographer, engaging the very friendly people, and their kids, they are not light-skinned. Don't forget your flash for fill-in.

While visiting Chennai, make a side trip to Pondicherry. Interesting former French colony. Architecture, shopping, food, different than other places in India. On the ocean.

i lived and studied in Chennai,INDIA for three years.you will love the place and the people. please Visit Mahabalipuram where the images made out of hand carving of rocks are mind boggling .take a tour of chennai and enjoy the local cuisine.take a trip to Pondicherry (used to be a French colony at one time) and if you have time visit ootacamond(used to be called Ooty)in the past,a hill resort with beautiful landscapes, when you visit Delhi, visit Agra also to look at Tajmahal. Ranchi is also great for stone carvings.Jamshedpur is great for textile industries.Enjoy it.

I was born 100 miles from Chennai, moved to USA 50 years ago but still visit India two months every year.
Dust will be a part of your travel so be careful if you are changing lenses. All the cities you are visiting are very colorful so street photography will be rewarding. Chennai is famous for temples, Jamshedpur is the steel capital of India. Have a memorable trip.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback wingpilot. I will look into those models. I'm also traveling with Nikon's Coolpix P7800 which has 12.2 MP & 7.1× Optical (28 - 200mm).

Appreciate the info daldds. I've not considered myself a street photographer but will explore the opportunity to expand my creativity. I do enjoy candids though.

Appreciate the info nancysc. Hopefully I can reach your points of interest. Transportation suggestions from/to Chennai?

If you are two or more persons, a taxi is best. Ask at your hotel for an English speaking driver, and settle on a price including waiting time in Pondicherry before you leave Chennai. 2-3 hours would be enough unless you want to also have a kind of French lunch at a cafe.

If you are on your own there might be buses to and from Pondi. They will be crowded, but you should be safe even with your camera/s.

The suggestions from others about Ooty and the Ashram are also worthwhile.

It is beastly hot and humid btw, so dress appropriately. Bottled water is available everywhere.

Appreciate the info Joseph Premaadan. Looks like I should travel with my tripod and monopod for the landscapes/nightscapes 😎. Or minimize my carry for just handheld.
