Great train ride
Can be cold and foggy at the top
Great shots at the beginning and on the ride
But iffy at the top
Have fun! Good luck!

The best way to enjoy the Cog Rail Road is to ride it! Ash from the locomotives is pretty much a thing of the past as they now use eco-diesels. The views along the way are glorious, even when there is fog. If you are using an APS-C digital camera, an 18 to 200 would be a great lens. Some wide angle shots of the interior of the cars, a few shots of the conductor during their "patter" as you ride the"stairway to heaven" is also jolly fun. Enjoy the trip up the "Rock Pile", and check out the train collection in East Barnet, Vermont.

Recommend that you wait until mid-winter then take the Snow Coach up Mount Washington Auto Road. It leaves from Great Glen Trails just north of Wildcat Mtn. Ski Lodge on Rte. 16. It stops a couple of times along the way and you can get out and take pix. Turns around at the tree line. They let you out there too. I've done it with my kids several times and you can ski down which is spectacular. It's beautiful, desolate, and inspiring. Great skiing after it snows which it does all the time.

Considering the idea of visiting the Cog Railway on Mount Washington in New Hampshire. We will be traversing from Burlington, Vermont to Freeport, Maine and a detour looks not terribly out of the way.

If we do not have time to actually ride the Cog Railway, do any you Hoggers know of a way to get good shots from a drive up the mountain. In addition, has a long time train buff, I think sometimes you could get better pictures by not riding the train.

Almost forgot. The strongest winds on the planet were recorded on top of Mt. Washington.

No way to capture the train up or down except while on the train. Excellent chance at top or at the Base station.
To get an overall view you can stay on Rt 302 just east of the Mount Washington Hotel and get the hotel with the mountain behind and at the right time of day the smoke from the steam train going up. Can't really see the train from there because of the distance (unless you have a super telephoto lens but them you miss the hotel).
Take time to ride the train even if it is not the steam engine. Plenty of history. Try for a clear day if you can. Beautiful from the top.
Many states and Canada visible.

Thanks, but that's not going to happen. Maybe 40 years ago. But not now.

One way would be to take the auto road to the summit (always fun). Once at the summit you can hike down to get awesome photos of the train as it comes up the mountain. There are many vantage points near and far for those shots. Whatever way you choose, don't pass it up! Enjoy your trip, there's no place like it.

Don't miss the opportunity to get a meal at North Conway Flatbread Company on the first floor of the Eastern Slope Inn. It's a takeoff of tbe pizza that originated in Waitsfield, VT at the American Flatbread Company. It is made in a wood-fired oven, all organic, and extremely tasty - and I am from NY where the best pizza in the world comes from. They get it right.

For me nothing beats a ride on the Cog. I've done it twice, once as a young kid around 11 years old and about 10 years ago in my sixties. It's a great experience and a chance to get some nice pictures. I would go again in a heartbeat.

This site is your best friend when summiting Mt Washington. Regardless of season weather can vary 60 degrees from base to summit! I hope you get good weather. It’s amazing up there!

Not only can the top of the mountain be very cold, but it is often very very windy. When my wife and I were there we saw gloves and lens caps go flying.

You can also get some great shots of the wheels and other parts of the engine at the base.

I prefer to drive up (on a weekday) If there is no traffic, then you can quickly stop on the way up and not just at the pull-offs. I typically go up there once or twice a year. Warm gear is a must. Make sure to bring your tripod if you plan on Multi-shot panoramics. The hotcocoa in the cafe is terrific.

Shots of train from the base station going up and shots of steam from 1st train of the day from the Mount Washington Hotel turn out. It is many miles away so do not expect any kind of detail. As previously stated the cog is on the opposite side of the Mt than the auto road. No other reasonable way other than to hike to get that special train shot going up the Mt. and you'll only get a Diesel engine unless you stay overnight on the mountain. Shot from the train on the way up or down and enjoy the ride.

You can shoot the train coming and going from the base station or from the top.
