I have the Z6 and upgraded it last week so it now has the latest focus improvements and eye detection. It took less than 10 minutes and is a very straight forward procedure. If you purchase a camera that hadn’t had the upgrade I am sure the dealer would do it for you before you left the shop.

If you take the plunge I am sure you will not be disappointed.

If anything, I would look at a faster lens or higher quality glass. It doesn't sound really to me that you need to do much else - again, if anything.

I'm getting pretty 'meh' on this mirrorless push. It's starting to remind me of My Other Passion (flyfishing) and people hyping the latest and greatest rod tech when there's absolutely nothing wrong with last year's product line or a product line that's a couple levels beneath the flagship.

A lot of you will not like this, but h ere it goes. I once had a job where one part of it was shooting these sort of photos. They were the band of every professional photographer's resistance, something with no possibility of creativity offered, jsut mindless repetition. We all called them "grip 'n' grins." This is aq situation where the advice to work with your stuff on technique is probably wasted.

You don't need a new camera, you just need a new toy. Perhaps a bigger TV, a new car, a new recliner?

If I get GAS, I take two teaspoons of bicarb in a glass of water

I'd go with either Z's. The S lenses are much lighter than the Dx or Fx lenses. The weight of everything is much better and the low light performance is jaw-droppingly amazing.

The best of both worlds go with D850 and you can use your lens that you have by the time you invest for the adapter and what not you are going to be spending some bucks and for what no mirror my 2 cents Mike

Gear Acquisition Syndrome

An essential health concern, not generally shared by your spouse.

Since one of your "reasons" for new gear is eye detection, take a look at Sony. According to the comparison field test reviews, it's eye detection is better than Nikon and head and shoulders above Canon. Of course there are other aspects of camera use that may influence your decision but since eye detection was specifically mentioned, .........

My suggestion is to rent a D500 or go with a friend that has one. The D500 is NOT, ABSOLUTELY NOT, (yes I am yelling) a low light camera. It is not good past ISO 1000. I use one every weekday in my sports shooting business and it is spectacular in sunshine. But when it gets cloudy and the ISO climbs it has noise. When I shoot at dusk and in gyms where the light is very dim, I switch to my D3s. Trust me or not, if you get a D500 and attempt to take low light photography you will think, I should have listened to tomcat. I don't care if you get an f/1.4 lens, it will not matter. The D500 sucks above ISO 1000. But I love it for its fast AF and fps at soccer and baseball games.

Thanks for the acronym explanation. Having no spouse makes GAS hard to treat.

I started in '69 with a Nikon. We are now too old not to squeeze in some adventure beyond our traditional habits!

Keep the D7100 and continue using it for what you are comfortable doing with it.

Then for the GAS, head down the path to the new world of unique offerings from Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Fuji, etc. Take a test drive of a Sony RX10 or RX100. Try one of the smaller, lighter M4/3 cameras.

If you encourage me, I will share whatever details you might want about my one Sony, three Panasonics, one Olympus and my Samsung. My wife has a couple "unique" cameras too.

Another more "extreme" approach is to consider a new smartphone from Apple, Google or Samsung. Their cameras are amazing.

I think this is a very good approach!

Trade-in your 7100 and get the D500. I did and really enjoy the D500. I like the bigger buffer and the crop factor. I just bought the body not the kit as I already had a 24-120 F4 lens. I think the rumors on the D760 only infer a full frame. Rumors are rumors the D500 is real. I enjoy mine, keep shooting...

I would at least consider the D7500. Very similar to the D500 and uses all of your current lenses. $800 new thru any Nikon dealer. You can take your savings and buy more and better glass for both cameras. I would keep the D7100 as a great backup.

I'll tell you what. I'm not going to bother posting anything about the D500 because if you want fast focus and low-light capability that is the go to camera right now. You couldn't ask for better. So....I'm going to post a link to Steve Perry's (Back Country Safari) review of the Z6 and Z7. This should give you a good idea if they are what you're looking for.

If you have a 7100 - Its a DX format camera. You must have a collection of DX lens to go with it. Stay with the DX format and get a D500. You'll LOVE it. It produces great pictures and doesn't weigh as much as my full frame camera.
