EV is just a meter reading of the amount of light present. It doesn't determine what to set your camera at. Once you know how much light there is you can decide how to balance the settings on your camera to achieve the results you want. I never even think about EV. To me it's just an extra step that I'm not interested in. I used to pay attention to it when I used hand held meters but haven't done that in forever.

The EV system is very useful for finding equivalent exposure.

I totally agree but after so many years doing this, all the numbers and relationships just sort of pop into my head.

One way to think about this is: "How much light hits the sensor?"

You can have the light come in at a rapid rate (more open shutter, which = lower f-stop) but a shorter time (exposure), or vice-versa, as BillNikon said a couple of posts earlier.

The third corner of the exposure triangle is the sensitivity of the sensor, represented as ISO, where 200 is twice as fast as 100, and thus less light is needed to make an image. It's the equivalent of the old ASA on film; there were fast films and slow films. These days we can vary the iso at will.

The part I tend to find is the f-stop calculations. The f/stop is the lens opening divided by the lens focal length, though the actual area of lens that's open is not directly proportional (remember pi x r(squared)).
Quite clearly explained in BillNikon's post. I'm sure the recommended books set it out quite clearly.

Not rocket science, but still potentially confusion to a newbie who wants to start controlling exposure manually, or semi-manually. Good luck!
