Is this 3+ pound camera difficult to shoot by hand?

Should be the same (easy) as all the other 3+ pound cameras, unless it does not fit your hand!
When zoomed all the way out, I expect very difficult.

You could try renting one for 5 to 7 days from LensRentals.com or a similar rental source and find out first hand. It would give you a lot of freedom to try the P1000 in a variety of situations.

What aspects of “difficult” are you concerned with?
Weight
Balance
Viewfinder
View screen
Image stabilization
Compared to what?

With respect, why not say you don’t actually know?
IMHO if my wife can do it and do it well then that strongly suggests you are in error in your expectations.

This is excellent advice.

Thank You...very good Idea!
I have Parkinson Disease. Stable shooting is difficult. I expect that for me, a tri or monopod will be very necessary. Are there any other aids available?
Hey New, I have one and love it. Yes it is a bit heavier than most Bridge Cameras, but there is certain steadiness in a heavier camera in many ways and uses. While I am old, I am in good health, so I have no feel for the problems you might have considering your illness. Renting one would make good sense, I think. Also remember if you buy most sellers will give you a 30 day return policy which would give you a great tryout time. Why rent in you can try for a month for free?? I got mine through Amazon.com and I think most major sellers provide the same return policy?? You might ask and if not, go somewhere else.
Good luck in your investigation.
P.S. If wt. is a major concern, and if you don't shoot a lot of RAW, why not take a look at the smaller and lighter P900???

Waaaaaaay out at the maximum zoom it sure is. And this camera is anything but compact.
As a back-up, I have not shot extensively with it yet but this camera is a monster for a bridge one. The center of gravity extends way out when zooming, dipping the lens if not well supported, plus the barrel is quite large for a bridge so it does take a little practice to get use to holding it. However, I find it no more difficult to shoot by hand than any other camera of similar size & weight. Obviously to get sharp shots at longer zooms a tripod is a necessity but so far I have liked the results when I needed the reach.
People here love it, and they have posted impressive pictures. I'm sure some will respond.

NO and YES. It depends. You should try it out in your hands before deciding.
I have always found that heavier cameras are easier to hold steadily.
