A Happy Accident

I was continuing to play with a photo I had posted in another forum and I turned off two layers. This is what I saw on my screen, well almost. I did use a little burning to get the cross to show up. I think I like it better than the original I posted. How cool that my little Bob Ross happy accident turned out so well. Please let me know what you think of it.

I love it! There's such a quirky feel with some edges disappearing and some distinct. Plus the architecture and the triangle shadows - so much to enjoy.

What got me hooked on textures was a couple of happy accidents How fortunate are we to get this kind of pleasure from photography?!

To my eye it just looks overexposed, with all due respect.

I can understand you seeing it that way and if it were straight photography I would agree but even though this particular creation was not intentional it is an artistic interpretation in the form of High Key. I have intentionally created this type of look before. Below is a link to a discussion from several months ago regarding creating low key and high key photos in post processing that originally got me interested in the concept.

It is several pages long so if you would just like to read E.L Shapiro's definition in that discussion here is the link directly to that.

I appreciate your comment and not being familiar with your level of experience or knowledge in photography, if you are aware of these two concepts and still find it overexposed then I would suggest it comes down to a matter of opinion over artistic expression. I am a novice photographer and know I have a lot to learn. As high key photographic art how would you improve it?

I think the "accident" snapping your creativity to attention is an usual aspect of real creativity, as is more work to bring it a bit closer to the new realization. I suggest you find a way to burn more smoothly, perhaps by using the edge of a huge soft brush. (Sky blobs are, uh, strange. 😊) I wonder if weakening things outside the church might add to your aim of the mystical/spiritual, or would that overdo it? The decisions when breaking new ground are truly difficult, no?

Bob you are right about the sky blobs. I went a little too fast trying to fix the cross. It probably should be a little lighter around the cross with definitely a smoother transition to the darker sky color. If I understand what you mean about "outside the church" you are talking about maybe blurring or fading out that section to give more strength and focus on the church. I hadn't thought of that and I will give it a try. My concern is will it be too abstract and effect your ability to see the church structure. In other words will your mind be able to fill in without the out buildings and wall as a guide? I won't know until I try it I guess.

Yet another work in progress.

You know I'm a fan; but this one eludes me. I think that ,high key notwithstanding, the areas that are not in shadow are just too blown out for me. I like the door and the areas inside the columns. That would make an interesting shot all by itself; but it is not what you were intending.

Erich thanks for commenting and I understand. Here is another version I worked on. While I still do like the "high key" version very much I also like this with the exposure and brightness toned down. It was taken at about 11:30 in the morning and it was a very bright and shiny day. Really the only clear day we had the whole trip. The shadows are a little exaggerated but I like the contrast against the adobe.

In download, if I get real close to the monitor, the texture becomes very obvious. Of course, that is not how you should view a photo. So, I leaned back and it became a really nice photo with a hint of an illustrative effect. It works for me. Well done.
