Does anyone know if combining multiple images could be used as a method of reducing noise?

Noise is by definition random and uncorrelated, so just as averaging multiple acquisitions of a noisey electrical signal improves the signal to noise ratio, I’d expect the same benefit from averaging images as long as the camera is still so that the SW can accurately register the images.
