Is it possible that you may have inadvertently changed the file size in the camera? It happened to me.

The camera can output 2 types of files, RAW and JPG or JPEG. With JPG you have a choice of compression or detail which gives various file sizes and is selected in the camera menu before shooting. RAW is as output from the sensor at full detail but needs to be converted into an image in a post processor which then can be save in various forms.

Personally, at my age (75) I am losing my memory!

The universal file is the JPEG. Usually they tend to be smaller files according to their compression.
JPEG files are used for display in the Web and for printing. By the way, sRGB by the same token is the universal color space.

Thank you for the information, camerapapi

Thanks for the information, PHRubin. I was having a "brain fart" the other day.
My memory is obviously not as good as yours and I'm 7-8 years behind you. Lord help me!

I just noticed what may be a problem with my D600. Perhaps someone can shed some light on the issue.

I was editing pictures shot recently and the finished file sizes seemed small. I took some test shots and looked at the unedited Metadata only to discover that the file size of a picture just taken is about 15.7 Mp. The camera should produce a file size of about 24 Mp.
I am shooting RAW and FF. Is my camera going South or am I missing something in Set-up?

Any help is appreciated.

Might help you to read the manual as it appears you may not have done so. There are various size settings for the majority of cameras.

.DNG is indeeed an Adobe file. Its Adobe's universal RAW file. Adobe has stopped supporting new RAW formats for PS-6 and has free software for converting these formats to DNG. The DNG file should have all the information in an original RAW file. A JPEG is a lossy compressed format that is a bit efficient package. It reduces size by compression and throwing away information the eye is not sensitive to. If you start with a RAW file (DNG is RAW) and save it as a JPEG, the JPEG will be smaller. If you start with a JPEG and save it as a DNG (RAW) the DNG will be larger than the original JPEG. I suspect that's because the DNG retains artifacts of the conversion process that the JPEG throws away.
