Capture One can't edit JPEGS

Any Capture One users have a problem editing photos that are not from their cameras? Someone sent me a JPEG from an unknown camera. There is a small "eye" indicator in the thumbnail. Which I think means locked. I did go into preferences and clicked "edit in JPEG." I can open this file in LR and various photo viewers. Thanks.

Here are..
- A screenshot of a jpg taken with a Nikon Coolpix P1000, open in CaptureOne 12.
- A JPG exported from that with corrections applied to exposure, contrast, saturation and even an elliptical mask.

The red spots on the screenshot are where the app is showing me the blown highlights.
The app is the Sony version, Pro level which cost extra.

I made the edits to show up, not what I would have done, normally.

Take a new photo on a random camera of your own. Convert it to .jpeg, either in your camera or in LR or other editor (not Capture 1). Open the .jpeg in Capture One. Can you edit the .jpeg? If yes, then the problem is with the one single file you were trying to edit, not with all .jpegs as the title of your post implies.

RJ proposes a valid test but the answer for CaptureOne is: Yes, it can. Can it do all jpg's from all cameras? Unknown. Can it do iPhone and Nikon Coolpix? Yes. Can it edit a jpg that was created by software rather than by the camera, in-camera? I'll test that later.

I opened a raw file from a Nikon P1000 in Preview and saved it as JPG. Then opened it in CaptureOne. At first my actions did not appear to change it. However, I was able to add a layer, change the layer inside the mask and output the result such that the changes were visible.

So the answer is: no, not until you use layers. The experiment is incomplete but that is all the time I think this is worth. To me, anyhow.

Good experiment. I was able to open a JPEG from my Samsung Phone - but not this file. Nor could I add a layer to this file.
I attached the photo that isn't cooperating.

And thanks for the help. Going through a number of random photos on my desktop, some can be opened, others have an eye on the thumbnail indicating it is locked - and can't be opened. I have the full version of Capture One 12 - so it shouldn't be an issue that it is license limited. (vs Sony only.) It's something in the Metadata that it doesn't like.
Is it possible to strip the metadata out of a photo?

If you provide a downloadable version of the uncooperative shot then, with your permission, I would try to work with it. Free offer.

If you are using a Windows based computer, try right clicking on the file and then selecting Properties from the drop down menu. Look on the window that opens and close to the bottom you should see Attributes and out beside of it Read Only and Hidden. If Read Only is selected with a check mark, remove it and click apply. Now go back and see if you can edit the photo.

It's not a Capture One issue.

Right click the image, go click on Properties, look in the General tab and un-check the Read-only attribute.

Then you will be able to edit it with any software.

Hi - The files should be attached.
I looked at the properties and the read only is not checked.

You will need to click the "store original" box prior to clicking "add attachment" in order for us to view the data.

EDIT - I just discovered that get-metadata.com can read this thumbnail!

Here it is upsized so width is more than 600 px. That generated a download link.

Very interesting to discover that exif could be read on your other, though! I wonder if it's related to file size when uploaded: if less than 600 pixels, the site keeps it as "original," not compressed for thumbnail and therefore retains the exif??

As it turns out, almost anything you do to it and save it will clear whatever obstacle is preventing Capture One from letting you edit it.

I loaded the image into I Capture One and could not edit it but I was able to export it to the Output folder. Then I copied the result from the Output folder to the source folder and the obstacle was not longer there.
