Martin Tower Bethlehem Pa. Down she comes.

This was the office building for the once great Bethlehem Steel Co. It set empty for the last 13 years. The new developer of the ground wants to build something else there. I though I needed to record it for our archives
They're going to need a bigger vacuum.....

They were very worried over the Dust. They told all the people that lived for blocks around to keep their homes closed up and their children inside.

Wow! Never seen a building taken down like this.

Hal! I love these photos! I've always wanted to photograph an implosion! It is sad, but really exciting at the same time.
I saw the demo of the Grand Hotel across from Disneyland many years ago. It was cool. My buddy Dean set up his video camera but he failed to start the recorder to record and got nothing. :) :(
Great set, Hal. Looks like the demolition people had their act together.

good job catching all the action, hal...enjoyed the sequence!
I lived nearby in Easton, PA for many years and had an office in Bethlehem for a number of years and in nearby Hellertown. The taking down of Martin Tower is a sad day for the whole Lehigh Valley. So many thousands of people made their living working for “the Steel.” So many more made their living supporting the Company or its’ employees. All of those jobs are gone. So many people lost their pensions. Many employers went Bankrupt over the years since. Losing Martin Tower is just a reminder of many losses this area and much of the industrial areas of our country have suffered. It is a part of our history. Thanks to all those who have memorialized this Martin Tower event.
As a young man I helped in the building of the worlds’ most modern Rolling Mill. The yard around it had hundreds of miles of railroad tracks. Pay was good. No one needed to go to college to make a good living in the Valley. The Martin Tower reflected the History of the Company. Extravagant, arrogant when built the Company was drowning in $$.
This seems similar to all of US industry. Now, so many companies across our country have closed. The employees for many of these companies have had their pensions taken away. The times have been tough for so many of industrial company employees. The Tower is that reminder.
