How to remove metadata...

1. In Photoshop, when you create a reduced size JPG from an original JPG, does all the metadata get stripped away?

2. Is there a way, when you take the original JPG (Nikon D300), to prevent any metadata being captured?

3. I want to send someone an original JPG but remove all metadata. Is there a way to remove the metadata 'after the fact?'

Reducing the size alone will not strip away the metadata. If you layer the image, save the image, then convert or save as a jpg it will strip away the metadata. Or, if you have Lightroom Classic, simply use the Export panel and at the bottom of all your choices it asks if you want all, some or none of your metadata to be included with the pic file. You can choose jpg file format too.

No, the camera will always embed the metadata.

1. No
2. I don't know what you are using for PP, but I do know that the Export function in DxO allows you to check an optional "Remove Exif Data" box if that is what you wish. This is a Post Processing option, not one that is included in the camera functions on any camera I have ever used. I have never used a Nikon.
3. Answer to 2 applies. In DxO, all you need do is export the file again after having checked the box.

Usually when chosing >Save for Web< metadata is not attached to the file!

I don't know that thanks. I would never strip the EXIF data from my images although I do not think it's useful to someone who wants to learn. The EXIF data is only useful when something went wrong.

There's a free Windows software which I've been using for quite some time called Metadata++ that enables you to edit and delete metadata information from any kind of image, video or audio file. The program has a few other useful features as well.

Good Morning,

What hazards do you see by not removing metadata?

TY

It's an option to keep the metadata or not when using Save for Web.

I have a similar question: I occasionally take photos with some film cameras that still work. How can one add metadata. When I get the film processed, I choose the option to receive the images as JPEGs. I would like to add metadata to the image if possible.

Hi Rook2c4, I downloaded the Windows software for which you provided the link. I tried to use it to remove the metadata from a practice photo but I don't know how to make the program work. Could you please explain the steps to accomplish this?

If you use PS you can stripe out all metadata and leave your copyright info with the file

I regularly transfer my field notes to my digital scans of negatives. It does take a good bit of knowledge of the file structure of either jpg or preferably .tif. I have a rather long list of data associated with a negative such as camera, lens, film type, developer concentration and time, shutter speed, f-stop, etc. Those get inserted into the header portion of the image file. Fortunately, my computer programming and database background comes in handy with certain aspects of photography.

Likewise, I can programmatically remove exif data from an image and generally do prior to posting.

Start the program. On the far left panel, select the folder with the image(s). The image thumbnails of that folder then appear in the center panel. Select the image by clicking once on it. Click on the "Meta Panel" button on the top of the screen, which then brings up the metadata list on the right side. Scroll down to the line you wish to change. Now you can change the info for that line by double clicking on it. All lines which can be edited have a check mark. Blue check mark means you can write whatever you want on that line, or leave completely blank. Green check mark gives you a drop down list to select from. Red check marks are editable date entries for the file.
The "Exif", "Iptc", "Xmp" and "Map Panel" (GPS data) buttons along the top give you further editing options.
Hope this helps.
