I see nothing derogatory, demeaning, or insulting about "That's not a fair question." at all.
I've used that statement MANY times, meaning that there are too many variables and other things to consider. Then I explain why.

I didn’t see anything that accused you of being negative or insulting, just disagreeing with your assertion that it’s not a fair question. It seems like you’re getting defensive for no reason.

Nobody was accusing him of any of that, just disagreeing that the question was unfair. It was a straightforward question.
