Hi All,
How important is it to use a lens hood on a DX 18-200. I rarely use on and almost never have lens flare on my D7200 with that lens mounted.
Thanks,
Dave

Obviously it is always dependent on where the sun is, which usually is around 45°ish off-center for me that causes flares. (Sometimes I actually want them). But I leave my hood on all the time more as a safety measure when traveling - on/off bus, thru narrow passages, etc. Rather it go flying versus nick in lens if I bump something.

It is important. The tulip shaped hoods are designed to block as much light as possible from entering from outside the frame without causing darkening in the corners.

Keep putting it on for a while, that way you can see for yourself! In general, you should also notice an improvement in contrast!

In what way have you not answered your own question ?

FWIW, you might need it in rain or snow ....

I keep the hoods on all my lenses for 1 reason - PROTECTION!

I prefer a hood to a UV filter to protect the lens. I try to eliminate all unnecessary glass.

The biggest importance for the hood is protecting the front element followed by preventing flare/image degradation when light source is close to being on axis with the lens.

Just try with your own vision, without a camera. I bright sunlight, form a 'Hood' with your hands, to eliminate any bright area. How much better/clearer you cans see now, without that bright distraction. Simple! Use a hood!

Good for you.
I use mine for 2 reasons, possible flare and additional protection beyond the filter.

I use my lens hoods to prevent flare but more importantly I always have it on for protection of the front element and lens. I have dropped a lens or two and the lens hood took ALL of the punishment.
I do not use a clear filter on my lenses.
