Your Canon G16 does have a vivid setting along with neutral and standard.

I found vivid and neutral, but no standard, and there are several other choices. I set the camera on neutral.

I'm beginning to think that that is the case.

Yeah, I said that, because I do not know too much about that Nikon of yours. In my Canon (5D), I can tweak the colors to my liking in-camera, using the WB shift, or bracketing! I can go into any color and shift its value by 6"stops", I can add or substract any color variations, hues, until it matches perfectly with the subject, or distort it in the way I like it to shift. That is easily done in-camera, but that differs from camera to camera. If that is not available, it can, like I said be done in pp, where you can go into the color channels were you find similar options!

Yeah, I said that, because I do not know too much ... (show quote)

Compared to the Canon 5D, the Nikon P900 is a relatively simple camera. It's not strictly point and shoot, but it isn't equipped with the processor's sophistication that your 5D is. It has many features that can be useful, but it's capabilities are somewhat limited by comparison. Pretty much any corrections would have to be done in post, and even that is limited because the P900 only shoots in JPEG. No RAW available. The much newer P1000 does, however have RAW capability. I just have to learn to operate within the camera's design parameters. Basic ability means that when selecting white balance, for example, I can select AWB, several preselects, or adjustments by selecting a specific color temperature, however I'm limited to the Kelvin temperatures Nikon selected and built into the camera. Like I said, it's fairly basic.

I hope you were joking about forgetting all the other stuff. I don't think the vivid was the main issue.

The original question was about why the colors didn't look right. The sun shines on the red flower, the red channel gets overexposed so much it clips that channel and some of the color information is lost. Negative exposure compensation done later corrects the brightness, but doesn't recover the color fully because it was not recorded due to the overexposure.

See how deftly I kept working the word overexposure into the sentence?
