I think the OP has the 24-105mm lens and asked if he should have the 70-200mm lens also.

Indeed. The FL range of the lens if fine and a good choice IF he can use a flash, it’s outdoors, or the light indoors is brighter than the venues I’ve typically seen. But if none of those things are true, the OP will need all the speed he can get, and f4 is likely to be marginal - just my opinion. Perhaps the OP can visit the venue prior to the wedding so he can find out.

[quote=MT Shooter]You have a pretty good setup now, the D750 is excellent in low light and the one stop of light you lose over an F2.8 lens can easily be made up by simply bumping your ISO up

My nephew's wedding will be here soon and I own a Nikon D750 along with the 24-120 f/4 lens. Should I consider purchasing a 70-200 f/2.8 or do you think what I have is sufficient?

I believe NIKON just yesterday has the 70-200 2.8 on sale at 600.00 off

If it appears that you are going to be THE photographer, a second body, extra batteries, and the longer zoom. Oh yes, add speedlites, batteries and a SHOOTING SCHEDULE. If you are shooting as family then have fun. I would not shoot a wedding again, unless I was NOT the official photographer (a lot of stress). Best wishes to the bride and congrats to your nephew.

Since you are asking our opinion, and this is coming from a person who shot weddings for over 35 years.
DO NOT DO IT. DO NOT DO IT. and finally DO NOT DO IT.

I think you should enjoy the wedding and let the person who is hired to take the pictures to do their job.

Invest in the 70-200 for the wedding and continued use.
You will use it.

Agree, get the longer lens. You will use it.

I agree with Traderjohn. Sit back, enjoy, and let the hired photographer do his job. If you must, take a few pictures with your phone or a small point-and-shoot.

Your primary goal should be the lens that ensures you, your nephew, the bride, their families, etc are still talking to each other when they see the results😊

Take photos even if you are not the hired photographer. Two years ago my son got married and had two hired shooters at the wedding. I shot at the rehearsal and the reception but not the ceremony.

Long story short the hired shooters never delivered any photos, nothing. So my kids have only a few wedding photos that people snapped with camera phones during the ceremony. Makes me wish I had shot the wedding too.

We don’t usually expect disasters but they can happen. Certain events are not repeated. Have a Pro but shoot it too if you can.

If you need to ask questions like that you should no go near a wedding. Its nothing about equipment its about controlling people and posing it right . Do you know on which side of the bride the groom should stand and why ?

Like the way you think! Sometimes we need to rationalize our purchase decisions.

With all due respect, do you have any training as a wedding photographer? If you do not let a professional take the pictures of your nephew's wedding. The wedding day is most probably the most important day for the couple and they are expecting the best so that they can treasure and share the images in the future.

If they are short on their budget to the point that they cannot pay a wedding professional then I can understand your willingness to help but still, if you do not have the training do not expect that you are going to do a great job.
When it comes to weddings it has always been my advise to let a professional do the job.

Would like to offer you encouragement on your-upcoming wedding shoot! I agree that a 24-70 would be nice, but a fast wide angle may be a better choice for those important wider shots). I am not a professional wedding photographer, but I took my daughter’s wedding photos last September at a very small, family-only wedding on a public beach beside the Don Cesar hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida. It was a morning wedding and the only lenses I used were a Sigma 24 art lens and Nikon 105/1.4. I had only one flash (and a tripod so I could be in some of the after-ceremony photos). I have a Nikon D810 and the all the photos were stunning from the ceremony, to the inside reception dinner, the sunsets, and the many photos around and inside the Don Cesar I took of my daughter and her new husband and family. I really enjoyed being the photographer I never regretted not hiring a professional. Sometimes less is more! Honestly, The photos were gorgeous and are forever creating smiles in a Miller’s Signature Album. Good luck and enjoy!
