I'm going to be traveling in Canada for about 4 weeks, and I'd like your input as to the best way to deal with phone calls to the states. I have Verizon cell, but would it be cheaper and more efficient to purchase something like minutes from Wal-Mart in Canada, and use pay phones for calls. Much of the time I expect to be out of cell phone range.

Thanks!

You can buy a CICI card for $5.00 $10.00 and use it on any phone and you'll have 100's of mins. Call anywhere in Canada and the USA. You can still use it when you get home. Just ask the seller or ask the operator. I use them when we go to S. Carolina in FEB,and March Its very cheap. Have fun in Canada.

Don't use the CICI card with your cell, you'll pay for the air time, roaming and waste mins off the CICI card. Always have fun in SC. Play golf, drink a few beers and take lots of pictures...

I'm up in Canada (Manitoba)and have the same problem going into the states. My phone carrier says once I've passed the towers in Canada, all calls, text and browsing are cost as my free plan only covers Canada. My BB phone is used for text only and voice calls for emergencies. I have purchased a "throw-away phone once I'm in the states to handle some of the calls I want to make. Not too sure what a CICC card is. Hope you have a good time in Canada. Lots of beautiful scenery up here is you know where to look.

Contact Verizon & tell them you'll be in Canada. They probably have some plan or light additional feature they can add to your plan, then you can remove it when you get back home. I have ATT, and DIDN'T do that .... found out the hard way that my roaming alone racked up $500+ in just 4 days on my smart-phone. After talking with ATT, they agreed to add an international plan to my account retro-actively to cover the time I was in Canada, I had to leave it on for 1 complete billing cycle, then could ask for it to be removed. The cost for that was $30.

Thanks georgeretired. I wish there was an easier way to limit the huge costs of phone calls between the US and Canada! Frapha, this is what I will do first, to make sure I don't get huge calling charges when I do make the calls from the North Woods!! Maybe I can do simple phone calls without jumping through all the loops you have to to use one of the international plans. I can see me trying to get all the numbers correct, and then failing, and paying both my server and for the card. However, I can see where use of a CICI or similiar plan could save money.

Thanks everyone for your assistance.

Thanks for asking. We're traveling to Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff, and down to Waterton before heading further South into some of the US parks in the Rockies. Plan to spend three to four weeks up in the Canadian Rockies!

I can strongly recommend a trip out to Moraine Lake when you are in the Lake Louise area ... a narrow, winding road to get there, but amazing scenery awaits. Moraine Lake Road ties directly to Lake Louise Drive just outside the townsite, as you are heading for the upper lake area ... have a look on Google Maps.

Also recommend checking out Athabasca Falls in the Jasper area, if you are into waterfalls. I have yet to see it in non-winter conditions myself (on my list of places to go back to).

BTW, my avatar is a Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep (hope I got that right) ... there is a small group of them that are almost always hanging out right next to the Lake Minnewanka road that ties into the eastern interchange on the Trans Canada Highway at Banff.

Great choice you also picked the best time of the year. Lake Louise and Jasper are gorgeous. Enjoy it and have a good trip.

When we go to the US, we buy a roaming package. Of course, we don't spend much time on the phone if we're vacationing. This might be an option for you when you come here (Canada).

You will love the Canadian Rockies, my wife and I were in Banff, Lake Louise, Morraine Lake (Don't miss Morraine Lake, off the beaten Path but worth it!) and we spent a few days in the Okenogan Valley and Kelowna, Canadian Wine Country. It is beautiful. Enjoy the Icefield Parkway between Jasper and Banff, and have your camera ready!!

Depending on when you come up here, watch out for whiteout snow conditions on the Icefields Parkway ... it can get really nasty.

HOPE YOU HAVE HAPPY AND SAFE TRIP. Try to get off the main road if your car will let you and watch for wild life, Be careful around the bull elk they can be scary beautiful...and dangerous, same with any bear.
