3D - Horizontal vs. Vertical Displacement

You will need a pair of red/cyan anaglyph glasses to view the anaglyph images. They can be downloaded and viewed at any size. The cross eyed versions should be viewed on a smartphone or similar small display. If you make the cross eyed images larger you will need to back away from the display.

The following images show how 3D produced using horizontal displacement differ from those that contain vertical displacement. The original images were captured using a smartphone but the same principle applies to images converted from 2D to 3D.

#1 is a proper rendition that clearly shows the 3D effect.

#2 shows the two images from #1. If you can free view a cross eyed pair the effect will be the same.

#3 shows what happens when the displacement is vertical. It should be impossible to detect any 3D effect.

#4 shows the two images from #3. If you can see any 3D effect it will be imaginary. If you can be convinced that there is 3D you have been duped.

#5 is #3 rotated so that the 3D effect works because the displacement is now right/left. But this is not the way you want to view the image.

Properly created 3D will work both ways - anaglyph or free viewing. If the anaglyph works, the free view pair can easily be shown. A refusal to show the anaglyph version is reason to suspect that the free view pair does not really work.
