No you don't. Give people credit for knowing what they want (they actually usually do) until they show you otherwise.

Many people have been helped by posters that asked the right questions as opposed to the questions that the OP asked. I say again - posters don't always ask the right questions. That's a simple fact and quite a common occurrence. Asking the right question can save pages of irrelevant responses and circuitous speculation.

putting an FX lens on a DX body does not
strike me as a way to minimize weight

Can you find one for $200? With VR?

Don't have money then go with the kit lens. 17-55mm. The 24-85 is not wide enough for DX.

The 18-55 kit lens is a pretty good lens optically. The old 18-70 f3.5-4.5 AF-S is what I have been using and its optics are a gem. In my lens the AF motor is broken and I have been using it with manual focus. I tried to have it repaired but the price quoted was higher than buying a used copy in excellent condition.
I had a 18-105 but I was never happy with it. I can say the same of the non VR 24-85.
I use and have used those lenses with my D7000.

The Nikon 18-70 is my walkabout lens on my D7100. Excellent optics and a reasonable speed. I’ll replace it only if I can find a similar focal length at f/2.8 that I can afford.

Baloney.
A 36mm equivalent lens is plenty wide enough. Zoom out with your feet. It won't distort size relationships nearly as much as wider lenses. And if you have the patience and learn how to stitch it is all you'll ever need except for interiors. Learn how to work with what you have.

This was taken with a 35mm lens on a Nikon FE back in '89. The negatives were scanned and then stitched in Photoshop. (Prior to that 4X6 prints were aligned in an album.)

This is a 5 image stitch with a 50mm lens

and this is 6 (or7) image stitch with an 85mm lens

A 24mm lens has a FOV of 73.7 ° a 34mm is 54.4° If you take just 2 images overlapped at 50% with the 35mm the equivalent FOV is 81.6 °.

On the other hand, just because your usual on camera lens is equal to a 35mm that doesn't have to mean you don't have something wider in your bag for those occasions where its needed.

Perhaps there's a hint in the thread's title.

I was thinking of getting a smaller range zoom lens for a walk around lens. My Nikon D 7100 usually has a Tamron 16-300 mm on it. I love this lens.
Ebay has a Nikon 24-85 G lens around the $200.00 range.
What do you guys think of the lens? The 24-85 is the range I like.

24-105/4 is pretty small and got a decent range (I use my 70-200 and 16-35 each on its own body as my walk around lenses)!
