I gave the new (to me) texture tool in camera raw a try. First file no texture, second one to the max. It can be applied selectively with the adjustment brush and you can slide it 0 to 100, but I did it globally at 100 just to see what the difference would be.

Reminds me of the "add grain" filter in Nik Color Efex. PSE's version of ACR doesn't have this feature, so I haven't paid attention to whether anyone else has mentioned or used. Thanks for the demo!

It's worth noting that this is a new tool in LR Classic and ACR, introduced (I think) today.

It just came through, I think the April update, of cc, so maybe it will hit PSE, who knows. It's actually in camera raw, so you can use it in the camera raw filter of photoshop as well. To my eye it doesn't do anything to the burned out white areas, I guess there is no texture there to enhance, where add grain I think would add it everywhere even if nothing was there. Could probably add grain with an adjustment brush, also, I'm supposing.

PSE's version of ACR is fairly simple. In the main editing area are quite a few filters and textures. However, once I found free textures online, received some from buddies, and figured out how easy it was to make my own, I rarely dip into PSE's. I'm still enamored with the magic of how different a photo looks based on the blend mode of the layer (whether texture or other) above it

I used it today and believe it will become a standard part of my work flow. I don't have a before and after for you (which is obviously what is needed) but here are two images I processed today on which I used the new texture slider at +50. I did everything else as I normally would. IMO, it enhanced the detail in the petals of the flowers. It should be noted the slider can go the other way and smooth if that is the desired look.

Beauties! Note that only in download does the true color show. That's a color space issue. If you can change your export to sRGB when planning to post to web, you won't have that issue.

It looks like the new texture feature brings out mid-sized details in things like skin and bark. It's not like texture processes in PS or PSE where layers are blended to introduce texture to a photo.

Thank you Linda. I will do my best to remember that advice.

Here's a video explaining the new texture feature in LR.

While I was trying the new stuff I also added the 'enhance detail' feature (also in camera raw, but it looks like you only get it the first time you open a DNG, and then it saves a new 'enhanced' DNG file. I'm not sure I noticed a difference. Didn't mess around too much with additional ps work, just my usual.

This has more subdued colors than your first, more fitting for this flower IMO. I like the out of focus areas too; usually I'm not a fan of oof in the foreground. Very nice!

I think there will be a use for the texture, but as a local adjustment applied with a brush in most cases. That was a really good video from Dan, explained how the different tools affect edge contrast.

As far as the enhance detail tool, the cost is 2-3 times the size of the original raw file size, and about 2 minutes to process, so you really have to want the tiny improvement, I guess. Might be a good way to get more out of a crop, though.
