I saw the white balance discussion using the Expo Disc. I wanted to know if anyone had experience using the promaster lens cap to set custom WB? I tried it a few times and was not impressed with the results. I watched some You tube vids on how to use them so I believe I'm doing it right.

You can't beat a 3 x 5, white file box card. I have several WB tools not expo disk, but still the same principal.

You buy them in the stationary department, at K-Mart. You know the little cards with blue ruled lines on one side, and plain white on the other. You can even get 4 x 6, if 3 x 5 is not big enough. No kidding there a lot of things to sell out there, and we buy too many of them. When something simple, will do the trick. :)

I would agree with steve40's recommendation! I have an ExpoDisc and I do use it a lot, but have also used the white 3x5 index cards (use the side w/o lines) and they work great and it's easy to just keep one in each of my camera bags!

btw I tried the white card and it worked great. If fact the results were just as good as the WB lens caps. So I have a bunch of extra lens caps..lol..The only problem now is figuring out landscape and when flash is used.

I know I can adjust it in post. It's good to be able to learn your equipment and understand the concepts too.

Shoot it right the first time whenever possible.
Without a custom WB or an 18% reference any WB adjustment in Post are a guess, abiet usually a pretty good one.

You don't mention your camera... With mine, I have learned to use the tempreture (Kelvin) adjustment and I set the temprature for the ambient light of my subject (ex. I'm in the shade, its in the sun, vice versa). I then shoot something red and if the shade of red in the LCD matches the object, I'm set.

I've tried adjusting WB in PP and it seems to add a LOT of noise!

This is the common "today's reasoning" answer for everything photographic. You still cannot bypass the real basics of photography. So many people today depend upon the theory of "Just shoot it and then fix it later in PP" Since photographic theory and basics remain the same even in today's "digital age", the old tried and true'isms of photographic technique are still valid. Obviously, PP is a wonderful thing and we should all take advantage of the benefits available with PS and other such programs, but you should never fail to use (or perhaps learn to use) the very basics of photographic principal which do not waver or change. Just sayin'
