Remember that Credit Unions may operate under the state banking regulators, or federal regulation of the NCUA (National Credit Union Administration). Many credit unions choose to operate under state law and regulation because of certain freedoms of each states Charter. Most credit unions who choose state regulation do so to open up their membership restriction, to operate more like banks. The advantage... hard to define and often hard to defend.

Deposit insurance differs, with the NCUA covering federally chartered Credit Unions.

All Federal charted and most State charted are NCUA insured however some State chartered have private deposit insurance. Scope of membership is much more open in state charters ie; no affinity group requirement like Federal charters although there are limits such as geography. Services are “bank like” in both scenarios but both chartering schemes offer the same consumer services and products. Being smaller than banks the level of member (customer) service and personal interaction are appealing to many people. Most credit unions have embraced technology in areas like home banking, bill pay and remote deposit among others. The co-op nature, one member-one vote, in choosing the volunteer board of directors, is appealing. The fact that Credit Unions are non-profit institutions as opposed to the profit motivated banks is likewise a positive attribute for many consumers.

Do you have a banking ombudsman? Contact them and see what happens.
In the UK the ATM supplier has raised the charge they make to the banks for every transaction....So in the last quarter we have 'lost' over 1000 hole in the wall ATM's. Some small villages and even some towns no longer have a single ATM offering free withdrawals. So much for a cashless society.

ATMs are not needed in a cashless society.
