This is a picture of a dead tree I took on one of my trips through Southern Utah somewhere near Escalate Canyons. I'm trying to be artsy and the original is boring so I played with it. Any opinions?

If your editing program does layers, it would be more effective to blend the original and this negative image.

I did. I haven't used GIMP in a long time and I see they have a lot of layer blend modes. I was trying for an abstract look. Did a pastel paint effect then a difference layer with the original then an invert.

You do Art a disservice if you think playing with a boring picture is ‘artsy’.
Try taking shots that you don’t consider boring instead.
Sorry if this sounds blunt.

If you say the original was boring, maybe you didn't work the scene itself hard enough???

Having spent hundreds of happy hours immersed in experimental and playful pp, I can say that sometimes I have a plan and sometimes I don't

You mentioned you were trying for an abstract look. I don't get an abstract feel because I recognize the elements. I think a close-up of the gnarly branches could be quite interesting!

First one is the original 1.5MB photo as taken through a moving car windshield. Hardly usable as is. The second is a heavily edited cropped version of the "controversial" photo. For those of you who want to dig your teeth in, feel free.

#2 is a decent shot. Much better than the ‘artsy’ attempt.

I like to take pictures of things that other people don't take pictures of. I have edited this 1.5MB picture to it's limit and it's beginning to grow on me. I like it. When I first took it over 10 years ago I did not know how to edit very well and didn't have the "expensive" software either. Still don't have the "expensive" software but what I do have works well. I might even print this out and hang it up.

It actually tells a story, flourishing life on the left, end of life on the right.

Is that Escalante as in the river that empties into Lake Powell?

If you are talking about the Colorado River where it enters Lake Powell, this is a bit West of that.

No.. There is a river or canyon called Escalante that empties into the lake. I do not know of an Escalate in Utah

I'm jumping in with my 2 cents worth. Whether you played with it because you were bored or not, I like the result; it's interesting and it's 'yours.' I like the original but anyone could get that shot. The artsy one may not be one you want to hang on the wall but every shot doesn't have to qualify for hanging on the wall. For an original image, it gets
