I am sure this question has been covered before but I cannot find it in search. I use Luminar to pp my images. Unless I shoot in raw&jpeg I cannot view my images in win 10 which I like to do prior to pp. I would like to just shoot raw an sort out images for pp prior to loading into pp software. How can I do this in windows?

Which camera and raw format? I can view Canon .cr2 raw files in the Windows 10 File Explorer.

I can view everything but Canon .cr3 files (R and RP). I previously used Fast Picture Viewer Codec Pacs, which worked beautifully, but they haven't updated their codecs since 2017. I know it is a new camera problem, but if anybody has any solutions, I would be interested in hearing them. I am using dpp4 and it has been a good and interesting addition to my workflow, and that may be what I use, but curious to what some might say here.

When I open a RAW file (NEF for Nikon) in Windows File Explorer, a program called "Photos" actually opens and displays the picture. Nevertheless I am able to view RAW photos in Windows 10.

You just need to Google "codec for _______"your camera brand. I recently got my first Sony and had the same issue. I found the codec online, downloaded and installed it and now I can see all my raw files just fine.

That's because you're probably doubling clicking on the file name rather than turning on File Explorer's file viewer panel.

Use the free application Faststone Image Viewer -to browse your files. It's much better than viewing them in Explorer.

There is actually only one application that can view your raw files themselves and that is FastRawViewer. There are other applications that many people like but that does not change the reality.

Others will show you a preview in various ways but that is not the same thing.

Not sure what that means. Fast Raw Viewer may have other useful options for some people, but I can assure you there are many ways to accurately view raw files before opening them in editing software.

I think the best advice you have gotten is to use the FastStone Image Viewer … it's a free download and you won't be disappointed. Yes, it will handle RAW files.

The May 2019 update to Windows 10 will have a codec for viewing RAW files in File Explorer.

It all depends on the software and the camera. I recently got a Fuji X-T30, and my LR6 can't open the raw files. I got Capture One (free), and that can open and convert them. Maybe an update to Luminar will let you open them.
